HipHop in the Flats returns

After a year-long hiatus, the celebrated hiphop cultural showcase returns to the Feed & Seed this Friday to celebrate the many up and coming artists in Lafayette’s often overlooked hip hop scene.

According to event’s organizer David Abshire, who will also be performing at the show under the guise of Wyzdom 360 says HipHop in the Flats seeks to celebrate and promote the local hiphop community and the culture as a whole as well as showcasing the area’s many hip hop artists.

“When you come to a HipHop in the Flats showcase, it’s like a backyard (barbeque); it’s a family atmosphere,” says Abshire. “We do this because we care about the community. It isn’t for profit. It’s for love.”

Friday’s showcase will begin with the traditional cipher where two of the shows rappers will play off of each other’s freestyle lyrics. Following the cipher will be the stylings of WyzWRDs, StressFreeMo Blak, Bede, Morris Colossus, Moose Harris, Mr. Envi, M.D., and Gizer. And filling in the dead space between each set will be DJ Andino, of A Funk Band Named Machete. In addition to organizing and performing, Abshire, a chef by trade, will also be catering the event.

Tickets for this year’s first HipHop in the Flats are $10 at the door. The showcase starts this Friday, Jan. 25 at 9 p.m. at the Feed and Seed in downtown Lafayette. For more information visit the event’s Facebook page here.
