Cane Fire Film Series screens '56 UP'

For its February offering, the Cane Fire Film Series will be screening 56 UP, a documentary from English filmmaker Michael Apted, which chronicles the lives of 14 children all hailing from different corners of England, who Apted has followed over the past half century.

The film is the latest installment in the Up series that began with a documentary that Apted made at the beginning of his career back in 1964, titled Seven Up, where the film's main concept centered around the Jesuit phrase, “Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” Seven Up was then followed by a sequal ever seven years since.

The film offers an uncanny portrait of each child’s life as it unfolds practically from beginning to end while also exploring England’s class system by selecting each of the 14 children from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Each of the children offers a window into a unique aspect of their own lives from suffering illness and poverty to enjoying marriage and childbirth all while showcasing their own contemplation as to whether their achievements and failures in life were due to circumstance or self-determination.

The Cane Fire Film Series showing of 56 UP will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the LITE Center’s Blanco Theatre. Tickets are $10, $8 if purchased in advance. For more information find the Cane Fire Film Series on Facebook here.
