Tuesday's Top 5 with Gavriel Morningstar

TOP 5 Small Business Do’s and Don’ts
with Gavriel Morningstar
(owner of Discordia Culture Shop)

The Do’s

1. Quit your day Job. Desperation is your friend. It keeps your hustle tight.
2. Read. Get a copy of Small Time Operator: How to Start Your Own Business, Keep Your Books, Pay Your Taxes, and Stay Out of Trouble! by Bernard Kamoroff, C.P.A.
3. Be the Hydra. Doing one thing is boring, help kittens find homes, support causes, get on Etsy.com.
4. Evolve. Constantly revise your offerings, once everyone buys something the market is flooded, move on.
5. Keep it real. Be Human, people hate robots.

The Don’ts
1. Don’t spend any money. After start-up, if your business doesn’t support itself let it die quietly.
2. Don’t get lazy. Taking days off is not cool. You will work 24/7. Its not a job, it is your Livelihood.
3. Don’t be afraid to be different. If your town already has 20 cafes don’t open another one. Set new trends or go home.
4. Don’t hire your friends. Don’t hire anyone. If they want to be Co-Op partners who have investments of their own that’s different.
5. Don’t be evil. Really, just don’t.

I love it. Counter culture type becomes an existentialist. Discovers why capitalism is the way, not to perfection (doesn't exist) but it is better than all others. It is natural. It makes us all relate to one another because if we don't, we fail.

Isn't this the guy who steals local artists artwork and posts them around town as his own, even though he "alters" them?

Psychological Industries has never stolen anything from anyone, all of our designs are digital creations. Some people just confuse parody, and homage with theft.

And Discordia Culture Shops philosophy stands with People-Based enterprise, Local Art, Local Music, Local Clothing Labels, Psychological Industries is only one of the local lines we represent.

Check out all the great Local Rock CDs and merch we host, not to mention the fact that we also book local bands in local clubs whenever possible. We are doing our part to help the local rock culture thrive in our city...

And i hope everyone takes the time to see whats at Discordia, before they take the advise of random anonymous nay-sayers who hide behind the pixels wishing they were doing something to give back to the community as well.

We have just added Incense, and Tobacco. And we have our first selection of Underground Art toys coming in this week!

Anyone can start a business....but getting and keeping customers is another thing. Appears to me that DISCORDIA rarely has much business.

Anyone can start a business....but can one keep it afloat? From my vantage point, DISCORDIA rarely to never has a customer ever in it. Only Mr. Morningstar posting things on his computer.

Where do all these anonymous naysayers come from? We can hardly imagine just how anyone could possibly take serious the remarks of individuals who are incapable of identifying themselves... [sounds like yet another hater]

Our shop is doing great and we havent heard any complaints from all our Customers/friends or the Companies/Bands we have helped produce promotional merch for such as...

A.O.C., Recycled Cycles of Acadiana, The GIVERS, Zeus & Collage Cafe, Trybe Habibi Bizarre, and Austin Texas based One-Eyed Doll...
