Snap 103.7’s classic rock enters market

Written by Leslie Turk
Monday, May 17, 2010

Tune your dial to 103.7 FM later this week and you’ll get a taste of classic hits with an emphasis on classic rock. Delta Media’s new station will hit the airwaves in a few days, though the station officially launches as “Snap 103.7” next Thursday, May 27.

The locally owned media group has been tweaking and testing the format at its sister station, Snap 87.7 FM, for more than a year and will simulcast the stations for a short period beginning next week, says broadcast veteran Sean Trcalek, who has joined Delta Media as director of development. “This is a brand new license for the market,” says Trcalek, explaining that the station is actually 103.7 KLWB but will be marketed as Snap 103.7. Expect a lot of Motown hits and soul music from the late 1960s up to 1990, he says. “We’re not going to play stuff from the ’50s.”

Trcalek says 87.7 FM’s new format has yet to be determined.

Snap 103.7’s key demo is 35-64 year olds, likely attracting slightly more male than female listeners. “There hasn’t been a station in the [Lafayette] market playing classic rock in a long time,” says Trcalek, noting that Snap 103.7’s closest competitor in terms of format will likely be Crowley-based KYBG, Big 102.1.

Great, I've missed a local Classic hits station. Closest competitor will be KOGM 107.1 Opelousas, currently playing Oldies, but reception in Lafayette area is poor.

87.7 should go to a Smooth Jazz format. Lafayette has a void in this area.

JazzFan, Smooth Jazz doesn't work in cities like Lafayette. The format only does well in larger markets. It was tried and failed in Lafayette. Tried and failed in San Francisco and Miami.

Great! I am sick & tired of 99.9FM trying to brainwash me with their pseudo-Rush Limbaugh commentary during the poly power hour. I change the station every time...

Ever since my husband located this station on the radio, it is the only one that plays in our vehicle and residence. Please do not ever change the format. We love this station and really get a kick out of the old commercials and movie bits. We like to see who can figure out the movie first. Great Job!

I came across the station by accident and love the music. You are officially locked in.Takes me back to my high school.... even younger days. Ask for my titles and artists though because it's frustrating when I can't remember them. Keep up the good work you guys. You are an exceptional bunch. Recently won the contest guessing the title of movie. That was fun. Need to go pick up my winnings.
Happy Holidays.

I am sooooo very happy that I found SNAP 103.7. Going to work in the morning doesn't seem so bad when you can "rock along" w/Kenny Hazelette from 6-10 a.m. It makes the day "fly" by quickly. I have "turned" many people on to your radio station and as long as you keep "cranking" out the tunes I want to hear, I'll keep listening!!!!!
