Galveston in the crosshairs

As Hurricane Ike heads toward Texas, a hurricane warning is in effect for the Gulf Coast from Morgan City to Baffin Bay, Texas, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Ike is a Category 2 hurricane, moving west/northwest at 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. It's expected to develop into a Category 3 storm before making landfall near Galveston around midnight tonight. Hurricane winds extend outward 120 miles from the center of the storm, with tropical storm winds up to 275 miles out.

Coastal storm surges up to 20 feet are possible, with some spots possibly seeing 25-foot surges. Isolated tornadoes are also possible today and tonight across south Louisiana. Currently, most of south Louisiana is under a tornado watch until 1 p.m. today.
