Former President George Herbert Walker Bush and former
First Lady Barbara Bush will be in Cameron Parish today to commemorate the
re-opening of South Cameron Memorial Hospital. The hospital, which was
completely destroyed by Hurricane Rita in September of 2005, re-opened in
November of last year. The Bush Clinton Katrina Fund provided $2 million – a grant
administered by the Community Foundation of Acadiana – to support the workforce
of South Cameron Memorial Hospital as the staff rebuilt the hospital from the
ground up. President George H.W. Bush also visited Cameron in 2006to present the hospital with the check and
to help raise awareness of the recovery effort in Cameron.
David Calhoun and Elizabeth “EB” Brooks are the first two employees of Lafayette Central Park Inc., the nonprofit charged with turning Lafayette Consolidated Government’s 100-acre Johnston Street Horse Farm property into a passive public park. Calhoun was named executive director, and Brooks is director of planning and design.
