South Louisiana voters pronounced several new tax proposals Dead On Arrival this weekend. Voters in Baton Rouge and Lake Charles voted down proposals aimed at funding new development. In Baton Rouge, voters defeated a capital improvement tax package for the second time in the past two years. The $901 million package, to fund a new jail, traffic light improvements and downtown development, was voted down 64 percent to 36 percent. An analysis in today's Advocate shows the votes fell largely along racial lines, with white, suburban voters overwhelminly opposed to the plan.
In Lake Charles, three of four tax proposals failed, including a millage to be dedicated to the District Attorney's office and two tax increases from the police jury for capital improvements throughout the parish. The only millage to pass was a tax renewal dedicated to the sheriff's office. Sheriff Tony Mancuso also pledged that if renewed, he would roll the millage back from 7.58 to 4.39, in effect lowering taxes.

Just to make everyone aware I am NOT the Shotgun. Now that the taxes have failed maybe the gov't can start laying off like everyone else in the country. Not counting how we have to scrimp and save to make our business run just a hair out of the red. This is also a message to the Chamber of Commerce folks: note their fellow members in Baton Rouge endorsed the tax increase!! Shot down by the majority who don't want to be taxed to death in the middle of the largest recession since the 1930's. DEATH TO ANY TAX INCREASE!! VOTE NO!!! The republicans in Lafayette love tax increases!!!! What's up with that????????

Also get ready for the school board starting to set us up for another tax increase. Will you Chamber folks endorse it like the last one you endorsed?

If 14 schools are in bad shape to the point of e of a new school, THAT MEANS FIX 'EM, IT'LL SAVE THE TAX PAYERS 35 % !!!!
NO MORE TAXES !!! My property taxes have gone up 10 - 20 % each and every year for the past 15 yrs. Oh, and then there was the library tax and the reassessment that raised it about 25 %. And the sales taxes collected have grown every year, give or take one, in that time, so the govt has collected record breaking taxes for at least 15 yrs.
LAFAYETTE WILL NOT SUPPORT ANOTHER TAX INCREASE AND I'LL DIE FIGHTING ANY INCREASES. NOT SALES, NOT PROPERTY... AND I'LL WORK AGAINST ANY EMPLOYEE OR POLITICIAN WHO WORKS TO GET TAX INCREASES.

Morrow, I am in COMPLETE agreement with you! Let's see if the so called tea-party members feel the same way! If they don't, then they should shut the **** up!! DEATH TO ALL NEW TAXES!!!

There will soon be a whole lot of shakin’ going on at Benny’s Sportshack Supplement Depot, a new concept by Opelousas native Benny Nele. Located at 2002 Johnston St., the supplement shop, smoothie bar and café, featuring hot off the press paninis and wraps, plans to open in late May.
Philip deMahy Sr., a once respected New Iberia ad exec, was sentenced May 2 to spend the next two years (he faced up to 100 years) in a state penitentiary after state and federal investigators found dozens of images depicting children engaged in lewd sexual acts on his personal computer.
This year’s Cool Town issue is all about people who are not native to South Louisiana but made a conscious decision to be here, to be among us, to participate in our culture and contribute to it.
A shelved ordinance transferring $200,000 from a northside drainage project to a south Lafayette development may not break any laws, but it stinks to high heaven.
