Allen Bares, a former state senator turned lobbyist, died late yesterday after suffering a stroke Wednesday.

A 1960 graduate of LSU Law School, the 71-year-old Vermilion Parish native had been practicing law with the Lafayette-based firm Oliver & Way.

Bares was elected to the state House in 1971 and to the Senate in 1979, losing a re-election bid to Max Jordan in 1991.
