Lafayette joins Wednesday's 'tea party' demonstrations

Lafayette and Acadiana area residents are forming their own “tea party,” part of a national Republican movement aiming to send an antitax message to Washington, D.C. The Lafayette event takes place across the street from the federal courthouse downtown this Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. The antitax demonstrations are intended to evoke memories of the iconic Boston Tea Party.

“On April 15, millions of grassroots voters will assemble in cities and towns across the country for the first National TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party to register their displeasure with our government’s addiction to wasteful spending, bailouts for big business, and higher taxes,” says U.S. Sen. David Vitter in an online appeal to attract more participants to the movement. “Help me force the Senate to recognize this day as a formal protest by the people against these policies,” Vitter continues.

Here’s what Glenn Ellerbe had to say in an e-mail press release sent out today on behalf of the group Acadiana Tea Party:

Just over two weeks ago, I set about doing what I could to bring the SILENT MAJORITY of Acadiana together so that we too could peacefully express our discontent with Washington D.C. I was quickly joined by others who felt the same way. As we set out to spread the word of our informal TEA Party, we were informed that in order to have a permit to use a P.A. system or any kind of elevated platform to address whoever showed up, we would have had to give a 30 days advance notice. At that time, we were (22 days) already too late. And that was okay since initially we were only expecting to draw a few hundred people.

But as we quickly realized, many more than that would in fact be showing up. So we have since attempted to gain some kind of leeway so that we would be permitted to use a P.A. system and/or an elevated stage from which guest speakers could be seen and heard by the crowd. This would also aid in quickly passing any relevant information that anyone might need to know in some event. But it is not to be. There will be no public address. There will be no “organized event”. At least, not at this point in time.
There WILL however, be a great many citizens who have decided to make their own little signs, bring their own non-alcoholic beverages, and their own VOICES to Richard Putnam Park on April 15th, from 4pm to 7pm. They will respect the law and will NOT demonstrate on the grounds of the Federal Courthouse itself. But will stay across the street from it, in the park. They will be PEACEFUL. And they WILL practice their Constitutional Right as put forward in Article 1 which states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
So, on public ground where they are permitted, in large numbers, they WILL be heard. Our Federal Government may have forgotten about the Constitution. But the people, have not! And there will be continued expression in future assemblies. Until WE, the people, have our country back!  And perhaps this is the purest way it should be.
Additionally, other citizens of Acadiana have individually chosen to meet here in Lafayette at places I am unaware of. Their intentions are to form a convoy and travel to Baton Rouge and attend the TEA Party there from 1pm to 3pm. I certainly wish them well and a safe return back here to Acadiana.
And I hope to see and hear you all. You know where I will be. Where will YOU be?

Let's get this straight. Bush gave big checks to oil companies after they declared record profits, spied on u.s. citizens, violated human rights etc at Gitmo, etc and now republicans want to complain about taxes and the Constitution? Very interesting. Maybe they should start by trying bush/Chaney?

What a bunch of spoil sports. There's nothing worse than a bus load of sore losers. If you republicans think you're overtaxed, go live in Europe where you'll really feel the pinch of 50, 60 or 70% taxation. Whaa, whaa, sniffle, sniffle, boo hoo hoo. Go stuff it and get about your business!

I remember Richard Nixon's frequent use of the term "Silent Majority" in reference to those who quietly believed in his way of doing things but feared public censure for saying so out loud. The thing is, they rightly feared public censure in the same way that racists, fascists, and anti-intellectuals fear it. If you say these things out loud, everyone will know you're a nut. Perhaps Mr. Ellerbe should consider remaining "silent."

"a national Republican movement aiming to send an antitax message to Washington, D.C....register their displeasure with our governments addiction to wasteful spending, bailouts for big business, and higher taxes..."

I think the republicans need to take a look at the facts: http://www.lafn.org/politics/g...t_2006.gif

Want to decrease the national debt? Keep the republicans out of office.

Yes, DOWN WITH TAXES!!!! I am one of those who makes over 250,000 dollars a year and thus will face an increase of taxes once Obama rolls back those Bush tax cuts in a couple of years. I for one am outraged that I will have once again to pay in the tax rates that Reagan approved of. It is way too much to expect for me to pay a few extra thousand per year to support the federal budget, just because I am in the top five percent earner's bracket in the country who will thus face pre-Bush tax rates. I don't know about you patriots, but I for one ----MUCH---- preferred Bush II's plan to cut my taxes further and then take out nearly a trillion dollars in loans from China in order to pay down the interest on the budget deficit he created with those cuts. Can we PLEASE go back to Bush's plan to borrow money for our federal operational budget from China so that I can pay a few thousand dollars less in taxes? PPLLEEEAAASEEE???? After all, it's not about the country, it's about ME ME ME ME ME ME!!! Glad to see that like-minded souls will be standing around the courthouse to beg for the government to borrow more from our friends in communist China...Yay rich Lafayette people!!!! Let all the poorer conservatives join arm in arm with us to say yes to China!!!!!

The republicans had a candidate who was all about fixing the economy. Ron Paul was the only candidate that knew what he was talking about and the Republicans treated him like an idiot and favored NearlyDeadGuy and his sidekick RetardedSoccerMom.

The republicans have cut their own throats and are completely irrelevant now.

you all are missing the point. the tea party has nothing to do with liberals or republicans.it is about being pissed at how uor gov. is just trampling all over the constitution .doesn't it scare you that obamah can lie right to our faces and no one calls him on anything.well it looks like people are finally waking up , and the guy that was making fun of hard working people having to pay more taxes , your an idiot . you can't even tell that socialism is being shoved down our throats at the same time destroying the wealth of this nation.this isn't taxation without representation it's taxation without lubrication.

The independent unfortunately labels the tea party as a republican movement. I'll give the paper the benefit of the doubt that they (the paper or person writing this article) was misinformed about this being a republican movement. I would however like for the paper to correct their article. This is a conservative and concerned citizens movement. I cannot speak for others, but as a participant these are the things that I am protesting about. The first is about what the federal government does with our tax money. The government is a business and needs to be fiscally responsible. The government bailouts are rewarding the banks for doing bad business. The national debt is skyrocketing putting us in debt to other nations. These fiscal responsibilities reach out to democrats and republicans alike! The Bush administration put us more into debt and the Obama administration plans to make the debt even larger. The 2010 budget is over 3 trillion dollars! where is all that money going too? This isn't just about the executive branch but also congress. Some of our "representatives" didn't even read the budget bill! The second is the broad power that the federal government has. Things like presidential executive orders are illegal by the constitution. The federal government has been ebbing away states rights for decades. Its time that they know that they work for us! To reply to the person about the LCG property taxes, there was at least one person holding a sign against president Durel. Also to reply to Kim, I will not be silent about the issue as long as I have wind in my lungs and a tongue (or keyboard) to speak about it. To reply to Mr. Mick, its not about me as an individual. I do not mind paying my taxes because I still believe that my tax dollars are going to good things like paying our teachers and our law enforcement. This is not about the individual tax payer, its about what is fair. I could care less if I got any money from the government. I work, I live in a free country, and I should pay taxes. I just want to know where my money is going. I hope this clarifies the point that some of us are trying to make and it is my hope that the independent clears up this article a bit. Like I said earlier, this might not be the opinions of others at the tea party but it most definitely is mine!

I am Glenn Ellerbe. And much to the chagrin of you foolish ones who actually believe a purposely misleading article in this leftist "newspaper" with an obvious agenda - let me be very clear and exact. I am NOT a republican. Surprise!! If you think I am, prove it. Nor did this tea party receive one speck of support or funding or blessing of the republican party. Or any other party for that matter. If you say that it did, prove it. You can't. Because it simply is not as you say. So, once again, you are wrong. Though I know that you, just like this "newspaper", will never ever admit the truth.
