Fortune: Lafayette among best cities to launch a biz

Fortune Small Business magazine ranks Lafayette among the top 50 best cities in the country to launch a business. In the mid-size communities category, Lafayette is No. 2, behind Huntsville, Ala. The magazine lists 10 large places (Oklahoma City is No. 1), 20 midsize and 20 small.

"Growing economies, affordable workers, stable housing markets, low crime — these metro areas have all the features entrepreneurs need to thrive," the editors write. This year the magazine partnered with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation to find the 50 most business-friendly communities in America. With help from Robert Fairlie, an economist and leading scholar of entrepreneurship at the University of California, Santa Cruz, it developed a methodology and sifted through data on factors such as per capita income, hourly wages, workforce quality, crime rates, taxes and foreclosures. It also looked at population size. "While some entrepreneurs prefer to locate near major cities, others opt for the intellectual spark and intimacy of college towns and other small, close-knit communities," the magazine notes. "One size doesn’t fit all, so our list is divided into three tiers: small, midsize and large metro areas."

Then it sent reporters to the top places. "Over the course of several months, we spoke with hundreds of entrepreneurs and economic development officials about the pros and cons of metro areas throughout the U.S. Using those findings, we adjusted our rankings and picked this year’s winning places."

It looks like this is "Money.Com" not "Fortune Magazine." What kind of grade should the Ind get?

Sorry Grading...but we get an A-plus on this one (not that we always do by any stretch): Here is the main page for the cover story in Fortune Small Business magazine (I wanted to send readers directly to the page with Lafayette’s position so didn't include it in the post): http://money.cnn.com/smallbusi...nch/2009/. (You can actually see the publication here: http://money.cnn.com/services/...ct.us.html). I guess by now you also understand that CNNMoney.com and Fortune SB are both owned by Time Inc., and that what you are viewing is obviously shared online content among siblings.

Whatever criteria was used by whomever, I think its a good bet they didn't have to travel the streets of Lafayette, or the parish, trying to get from one place to another. One issue they should address is the time it takes to get to where you want to go, and how long it takes for your vehicle to be rattled to death and need replacement.

Affordable workers translates to slave labor for college grads. And we wonder why our brightest college grads are leaving in droves.

Love Lafayette! Thanks, JP for the warning. Wish I saw it first. Don't understand it either. Lafayette is such a great place that too many take it for granted. Traffic? We are a CITY. Expect it. That's life. We are listed on the top national lists for colleges, business, lifestyle, among others. I am proud to say that I Live In Lafayette LA! We have been an island during these bad economic times. How about we continue working together. And yes, thank god we got fiber. For those of us who need it more for than just playing games or watching TV it is a blessing. Too bad some still don't know what that means to our economy. GEAUX LAFAYETTE!
