Don’t worry, be happy, live to 182

Last week, New Iberia celebrated the birthday of a centenarian. Georgiana Marks celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday. This week, Max Derouen, also of New Iberia, turns 182. That is, in dog years. The 26 year old terrier-cross, born in 1983, has a birth certificate proving his longevity, lodged in the files of Robichaux Veterinary Clinic in New Iberia. His owner Janelle Derouen is currently awaiting confirmation from the Guiness Book of World Records that Max qualifies as the oldest dog in the world. Is the Bayou Teche the long-sought fountain of youth? Maybe not.The secret of longevity, says Janelle Derouen, is that Max is a very, very laid back dog.

Greetings from Sydney, Australia.

I'm sorry to rain on your picnic, but Max is NOT the world's oldest dog. A poodle named Taffy Gayle, in Jasper, Alabama is a year older.

Owned by Brenda and Barney Harvill, Taffy Gayle is blind, deaf and missing most of her teeth. She has been the couple’s baby since they could never have children of their own.

Taffy Gayle was born on Sep. 22, 1982... The puppy was given Brenda's middle name, Gayle, when she was registered with the American Kennel Club.

Brenda likes to buy infant clothing at the thrift store and play dress-up with her. The little dog’s wardrobe includes T-shirts, sweaters and a pink party dress.

Taffy Gayle is fed Vienna sausages as a treat. She also eats potted meat, stewed chicken and minced meat..

On her birthday, Taffy Gayle gets her own little cupcake with a candle on it and wears her party dress.

OhmyNewsInternational has published a story about the world's oldest-ever dog, an Australian sheepdog which lived for 29 years, five months and seven days. See tinyurl.com/cpvx7n

I've got an Old English Bulldog who's only 8, but won't live to a ripe old age. His lungs are giving out and he's got a hip that gives him problems. Eventually, his meds won't work well enough, and I have to watch closely for the time when we'll have to put him down. He's been a really good pet as far as they go (bulldogs are a nasty, noisy mess) and he deserves to live comfortably and die in peace.

I'm sorry to drizzle on your parade, Eric, but poodles aren't dogs.
