Edwin Edwards winding down prison term

edwinedwards82.jpgFormer Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards, 82, is heading into the home stretch in his 10-year prison term on racketeering charges. Imprisoned in 2002, he is due to be released from the Oakdale Correctional Facility in a year, then spend six months in a halfway house before he is given back his freedom.

WDSU-TV in New Orleans reports, in October, Edwards was granted a three-day furlough, par for the course for prisoners reaching the end of their term of incarceration. Edwards spent his furlough in Baton Rouge.

While in prison, Edwards has worked with biographer Leo Honeycutt on a much anticipated book, due to be released on Dec. 1. In an interview last month with Fox 8 TV, Honeycutt told reporters Edwards is looking forward to feeling the “freedom of the open air and the open road. The first thing he would like to do when he gets out is that he would like to take an RV and go out West.” Perhaps working for a charity in the state is in Edward’s future, but what is not on the table is running for political office, even if he could. Honeycutt told reporters, “Even if he were to get a gold seal pardon, he is not ever running again so people can forget that.”

I can't wait until he is released--just to prove all the naysayers wrong--he didn't die in prison. he'll be alive and kicking!

What is it with America and Americans lol, this guy screws up and he gets a book deal and we will buy that book and he will make millions again defying the odds. Were it anyone else and they would die old and gray and alone but not Edwards, he sells pardons and takes bribes and people want to think he is Robin Hood. Well some are gifted with a good life even when they screw up.

I'll tell you what, Governor Raj might not do anything to get himself in jail, BUT HE'S NOT DOING A DARN THING FOR LOUISIANA EITHER!!! This state is not in any better shape than the first day he took office. You can say what you want, but this state was moving in a good direction when Edwin Edwards was governor. I have never been a fan of Edwin, but I'm sick unto death of Louisiana's roads. They rattle a perfectly good vehicle to death, till pieces fall off. My whole outlook on this governor would change if LA 339, Verot Schl Rd and a few other state roads in Laf. parish were to be repaved.

By Morrow "I have never been a fan of Edwin, but I'm sick unto death of Louisiana's roads."

I don't recall the roads being better with Edwin but I do remember the investigations and bribes.

Well I remember better roads under Edwin being better! They were NEW then. And those that weren't were repaired and it doesn't matter to me anyway because I was riding them then. Now, I drive them and they're dangerous and the money has been there, but not one of the past 3 governors, including Gov. Raj, is willing to make them better.

This man didn't do anything less than any of the others, he was just caught, that's it. And to top it all off, after he was caught, he told the truth about it. Let him go. He is one of the only ones that helped the people of Louisiana. He has done more for this state than any one else. The state was in a much better situation with him as governor. I wished he'd run again...I'd vote for him.

It is hard to believe that 8 years in prison isn't enough to satisfy this man's debt to society for the crime he was convicted of in 2001.

The ten year sentence was unfair and was given by a vindictive judge...and having served 8 years at age 82...enough already.
Gov Edwards had his faults, but he should be treated fairly.
"Eight (years) years is enough" !!!!

No wonder the State of Louisiana budget continues to ballon, You are wasting money on too many questionable projects, such as paying millions of dollars to federal felons. Governor Edwin Edwards, who engaged in unethical behavior and was finally convicted, has actually collected almost $300,000, this was for the first five years. Another fast one he is pulling on the taxpayers of Louisiana.

Edwin was/is cocky, arrogant, deceptive, and thought he was untouchable. I have known Edwin since 1969 - he is the epitome of asininities. Let him do his time and then let him sit in his rocking chair on the front porch (not his RV), contemplating the fruits of his “labor”. Karma can be a bitch!

For some no matter what is done to them, their character remains unblemished; their friends remain at their side; and those who love them keep them close to their hearts. Such is the life and legacy of this great man. Governor Edwin Edwards, now and always.

Governor Edwin Edwards was the best thing that ever happened to the state of Louisiana. The people of our state had jobs, teachers and state employees got raises. I can remember when the World's Fair was hosted here in Louisiana, every child got a gift from the governor, a chance to go to the World's Fair. They were given a ticket to go. How many governors you know did that. I'm not saying the man had no faults, but he looked out for the people of his state. He did what mattered, he got the job done. If a problem came about, he dealt with it. He did't hide, or brushed it aside. He took a stand and saw it through. Let the first man without sins cast the first stone. The pot surely can't call the kettle a bad name. The people who was so ready to see this man jailed. Should have gone to jail too. I think they put the spotlight on Gov. Ed, so no-one would look their way. Surely there were skeletons in their closets. He was honest about his beliefs and how he lived his life. He did't mind calling a crocodile a crocodile, or an alligator an alligator. You're not a man if your afraid to speak your mind, hold your own,or take a stand and hold it. Gov. Ed had that and more. Governor Ed, know that not everyone was blinded by that light. You're a treasure to this state, Louisiana. Thank you for all that you've done for us. We appreciate you. God Bless You.
