Peep Goat: Specter switch may hurt Vitter

Peep Goat, the INDsider's insider, says U.S. Sen. David Vitter has been traveling the state pushing the message that he should be re-elected because his defeat would possibly give Democrats the 60th vote they need for a filibuster-proof majority (as it stood at 58 after the elections) if Democrat Al Franken were to prevail in the Minnesota recount versus Republican incumbent Norm Coleman.

Lightning has struck not once, but twice, since then, Peep points out. Not only did the Minnesota Supreme Court certify comedian Franken as the winner (yes, Coleman’s place in history will be that he lost to Al Franken), but this week’s party switch by 29-year Republican Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania to Democrat now negates Vitter’s “boogie-man” strategy. Vitter no longer can claim he is the “only thing standing between the Democrats and a filibuster-proof majority.” Peep's note to advertising team: time to go back to the drawing board.

The intriguing thought to consider is whether it now frees up the national Republican Party (since it no longer needs to protect a razor-thin one vote filibuster proof margin) to clean up the Vitter mess by throwing him under the bus in the 2010 Republican Primary in favor of Secretary of State Jay Dardenne.

A story in yesterday’s Times-Picayune suggests Vitter’s approval rating, while still solid, is slipping. In a recent Southern Media & Opinion Research poll, fewer than 35 percent of white voters said they will definitely vote to re-elect Vitter; 39 percent said they would consider someone else; and 22 percent said they will definitely vote for someone else. Read the T-P story here.

Vitter’s sex scandal will clearly dog him the remaining days of his political life, just as the Republican Party is desperately seeking to redefine itself, its image and its values (Jindal’s State of the Union response and keynote address to the Republican Congressional Committee Dinner are prime examples). Peep says Republicans both in state and out may see this as a good time to rid themselves of the albatross that Vitter has become to the party — particularly among Republican female voters. Sources close to Dardenne indicate he is more than just casually considering it. One close ally of Dardenne had this to say, before the Specter party switch occurred: “Jay is very seriously considering it. Very Seriously. His only apprehension is whether he wants to commit to a tenure in federal politics versus state government.”

Peep believes the affable and easygoing Dardenne would presumably draw upon a considerable network of current and former legislators statewide should he mount a primary challenge to Vitter. A war chest of $6 million to $8 million minimum would be necessary, so Peep's sources expect to hear a decision from Dardenne no later than the fall, a little over a year from election day. Peep couldn't help but note that the interim summer period before an announcement is made by Dardenne will make Vitter sweat a little more than the rest of us this summer.

Specter switched parties so he have a better chance of being re-elected. Specter is a selfish liberal.. . I'm glad he switched . I wish John McCain, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe would leave too...As for Vitter, i'm supporting him...I don't care how many prostitutes he associates with.. As long as he doesn't turn into an Obama Socialists , I'm voting for him ...

I will support Vitter until the end of the universe as he is a true defender of decent moral values and virtuous living... at least in his rhetoric. His actual behavior doesn't matter, he can sleep with hookers, snort drugs, shoot adorable children who happen to walk into his yard, just as long as he remains bellicose in his opposition to Herr Barack Hussein Adolph Stalin Chairman Mao Che Castro Karl Marx Lenin Trotsky Obama (his real name on the secret birth certificate hidden in a Moscow KGB basement file.) Only a defender of the one true faith of conservative orthodoxy like His Royal Holiness David Vitter (just do as he says, not as he does) is worthy of our unquestioned blind support against the godless atheist secular humanist Socialist Communist cabal plot to turn our sacred Free Market Capitalist Fundamentalist Christian Pro-Business Jesus approved (our savior and CEO) economy of freedom and unlimited personal wealth into a poor imitation of France/Sweden/the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics where the government dares to implement policies that aid the poor, the working class and the middle class at the expense (Gasp!) of our uber rich who toiled and suffered greatly to accumulate their immense fortune. Obviously only a leader with the awesome moral turpitude of the bright shining Vitter can stand between us and the end of Western Judeo-Christian Civilization where they take our guns, force us into re-education camps where they will teach reality based science over Creationism, impregnate young innocent girls and then make them have abortions to harvest the stem cells while exposing every Freedom Loving True American to "Swine Flu" which was created in a Socialist Biology Lab hidden in a basement in Alberta Canada by "scientists" hell-bent on using this virus to mutate God Fearing Conservatives into caring, compassionate human beings who actually give a damn about someone and something besides their own myopic personal conspiracy theories that dark forces are out to get them in their bunker and deprive them of life and liberty. Yes, Obama is the Dark One and He must be stopped, no matter how much damage such mindless opposition will do to our nation and the vast majority of her citizenry. We must destroy our nation to save it. Vitter has made that very clear in his magnificent moral stand for truth, justice and the American Way. I say Vitter today, Vitter tomorrow, Vitter Forever, until he brings down this Republic in the name of principal (just as long as he doesn't have to follow such principals) and rid us of this democratically elected and highly popular President placed in office by the will of the People. How dare They thwart the desire and vision of the Almighty Vitter!!!

"Fatherland Defender" is my evil twin. Sometimes I let him out when he needs to express his views on all things Vitter. Our Senator seems to enjoy being on the radical fringe of reality, so I just let "Fatherland Defender" go join him looking out over the abyss. It gets better when I take my medication but no matter how many pills I take, Vitter is still there when I wake up. Scary.

Vitter disgusts me. People of Louisiana how can you have such person representing your state?
