Swine flu fear spreads from private to public schools

The Lafayette Parish School System reports today that a second student has tested positive for Type A flu. The student attends Comeaux High School. The first student to test positive is a student at Katherine Drexel Elementary who, according to the LPSS, is said to be feeling better. There's no indication that either case of flu is the H1N1 strain, widely known as swine flu. Samples from both students have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control for testing.

The Daily Advertiser, meanwhile, reports today that Cathedral-Carmel could remain closed for up to two weeks if any of the five flu cases there test positive as H1N1. The school closed Wednesday, and at least one of the Cathedral-Carmel students visited Mexico recently where the swine flu outbreak began.

Five Catholic schools in Acadiana were shuttered this week due to swine flu concerns:  Cathedral-Carmel, St. Pius Elementary, Our Lady of Fatima School, St. Cecilia School in Broussard and Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau.
