The Independent’s own Cherry Fisher May guest conducts a portion of Acadiana Symphony Orchestra’s “Joy to the World! Sicily & Beyond” concert tonight for their “So You Think You Can Conduct?” contest.
“It’s always been my dream to conduct — I was a music major as a freshman in college and really wanted to be a symphony conductor but back then, it wasn’t a realistic career path for women so I moved on to something more practical like horticulture,” says Cherry. “The gender barrier in symphonic circles has been broken, thankfully, and I love where my life ended up — especially since it allows me to have experiences like this one!”
The “Joy to the World” concert kicks off at 7:30 p.m., tonight, Dec. 19 at the Heymann Performing Arts Center with a reception following the concert on the Mezzanine.
