Durel, Savoie ‘imagine’ Lafayette’s future
Written by Walter Pierce
Tuesday, February 02, 2010

jodu_tjoe.jpgCity-Parish President Joey Durel was joined Tuesday by UL President Dr. Joe Savoie for the annual state of the parish address at the Cajundome Convention Center. The two laid out a vision of Lafayette’s economic future that hinges on shared goals of the city-parish and the university.

Durel touted Lafayette’s growing nationwide reputation as a center of innovation. City-parish government, he pointed out, has been invited to be part of a panel discussion at the upcoming U.S. Chamber of Commerce convention in  Washington, D.C., to discuss such projects as LUS Fiber.

Early in the presentation Durel praised the resiliency of the Lafayette economy, which enjoys an unemployment rate (5.5 percent) well below the state average (7.5 percent) and far below the national average (10 percent), with a caveat: “There is no denying that the economic plight of the country has affected Lafayette. Our sales taxes continue to decline and if there isn’t a leveling off in the next few months, we will be forced to make some difficult decisions as it relates to cutting our budget.”

Durel also mentioned new initiatives related to LUS’ fiber to the home project, including an event April 20-22, Fiberfête, during which technology experts from around the country will be in Lafayette to discuss and plan the city’s technological future. “I’m committed to seeing Lafayette build on what’s already great about our city and our parish by us becoming a leader in driving fiber-powered 21st-century innovation,” he said.

Overall, the joint presentation (photo by Robin May) was short on timetables and funding mechanisms for their vision for Lafayette’s future development, but long on cooperative-endeavor ideas for applying smart growth principles to UL-owned land in the heart of Lafayette. “It is important to recognize that the essential economic advantage of cities flows from their abilities to promote and encourage interactions among people,” Savoie told the sold-out lunch crowd. “Cities work best and are most successful economically when they enable easy interaction among people.”

Among the ideas mentioned:

● A performing arts center/entertainment complex at the site currently occupied by Blackham Coliseum

● Commercial development on Congress Street across from Cajun Field in the University Research Park that would include hotels, restaurants, shops, retail and residential spaces

● Transformation of the horse farm into a passive, public park

● Conversion of Johnston Street into a boulevard

● Light rail transporation within the city

“All of this and much more will be addressed through a comprehensive plan,” Durel said in closing.

Are you kidding me? It took 50 years to get a damn bridge built across the Vermilion. Keep dreaming. Anyway, they are both terrible ideas for Lafayette - Let's restrict traffic on the major artery through Lafayette and build a transport that NOBODY will use. If anyone thinks people in Lafayette will abandon their cars and use mass transit is crazy. Lafayette is not even laid out in a way that makes it feasible for most people. This is not NYC people.

What is really needed is a loop around the city so traffic will stop clogging the residential streets.

Exactly who's gonna pay for this? They can't even pay the bills they have now (either of them - UL or LCG).

I agree the rail transportation is stupid. Its just stupid. And I'm not so sure about Johnston St. because I think most of the owners/renters of buildings on that road will revolt. And I think the cost would be astronomically prohibitive.

Now, for the record, I want city/parish government out of the business of the iniversity and the university to see to its own business. Before dollars got tight, each was just fine minding their own business and that is how I believe it should stay! I don't trust either one to do business with the other and the past university's president's attempt to make another sweetheart deal with and for his friends come to mind.....

Converting Johnston to a boulevard is a fantastic idea. The light rail is a pipe dream at best. We already have a loop. Its called Ambassador Caffery Parkway. It was built on the outskirts of the city as a loop believe it or not. But somehow, once the mall was built, along came walmart and all the big box stores, with way too many red lights. thats progress for ya.

Jesus, as time goes on, the dollar value declines, and costs increase,
THE CAMILLA BRIDGE FINALIZATION IS ""SIAMESE BOUND TO THE LOOP CONSTRUCTION"""! THE ESCALATING NUMBER OF PARVENU who were purchasing the Ambassador Caffery parkway, " future loop", right of way were stumbling all over the drool of their own crony peeps, scrambling to grab land from the unsuspecting land owners......after studying the plats........THE SAME SCENERIO FOR THE ACADIANA MALL! SHEEET GO TO THE COURT RECORDS AND SEE WHO OWNED THE LAND UNDER THE AMBASSADOR ROAD AND THE LAND ON EITHER SIDE OF THE ROAD ,THE LAND UNDER CAMELLIA BLVD. AND SURROUNDING MASS OF LAND BORDERING CAMELLIA, RIVER RANCH, THE WHOLE
CA-CA POT, WHEN THE TIME CONSTRUCTION BEGAN, THE DUST HAD SETTLED.....
"ITS CALLED PROGRESS, AND IT IS TIGHTLY CONTROLLED BY OUR GOVERNING ADMINISTRATION....

Jesus, there is a stymied progress of this city, ya don't go from a 2-horse town to ah Clydesdale team, led by a birdseed salesman and a television person whose station airwaves carry 50 miles. you want to be a Champion, you have to employ/elect Champions. In football parlance, you can't become a winner with a fourth-rate team.........
That, ain't no jive !
