In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick's Day was traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17.

There were always three days of the year when all pubs required to close : Christmas Day, St Patrick's Day and Good Friday. I think Christmas Day is the only holdout left. - Bernard Ussher
