To have X acres of land which obviously isn't being used for Ag purposes are cheating the system. ALL property should be taxed as at least residential if said property isn't being used for Ag. Take for example the wooded properties than line Kaliste Saloom. 20 acres paying pennies on the dollar for taxes, no lumbering of the property but able to sell it for commerical value. While i do believe in large tracts of land being held by individuals, at least make it be used for the status its labeled as. But I hope that you will recognize its not easy to support public policy that ask for equal treatment, when your friends and family know it will cost them money. Ask any of my friends, beleive me they are tired of hearing it. What I have been trying to do for the last 15 years is convince the public that this is bad public policy and law. I have raised this issue with every politician I have spoken with, from Romer, Foster, Blanco and Jindal and every legislater who would listen. And this newspaper. I don't focus those who take advantage of a bad law, by saying the are dishonest, because I don't know that. I want to keep the discussion away from personal name calling. It confuses the issue. The issue is a bad law, which sets up the ability of politicians to do favors and thus potentially breeds corruption. So I hope that you will excuse my tactic if it is not the same as you employ. Lets unite on changing the law, your way, my way, either way, any way. The change is a state constitutional one. Ag property is tax at its “income” level as agricultural lands, regardless of location (in the middle of town or in the country), all other property is taxed at “market value”, regardless of its use.
