I am literally without words... I cant believe we dont teach our kids to stand up for themselves, even if it means fighting back, rather than create an unenforceable law. - Zachary Barker

The Autism Society of Acadiana is addressing the issue by sponsoring a bullying prevention workshop in Lafayette on Tuesday, April 24th. This day-long seminar will take a three pronged approach to address the topic: why the bully acts the way he does and how we can help him overcome his behavior, how to empower the victim so he can remain safe, and how bystanders can help promote tolerance and compassion in our communities. Please go to acadianaautism.com for more information. - Ginny Freshley Kelly

Two thoughts.

One, as laudable as the goals are I'm not sure a law is really the right tool to change the culture of homophobic harassment in schools. As most schools tend to have anti-bullying policies already and they don't really seem to make that much of a difference, I'd imagine that most school officials who turn a blind-eye to homophobic bullying will just continue to do so.

Two, the way you stop bullying is by uniting and standing in solidarity with the bullied. Schools, both students and faculty, need to take it upon themselves to create and promote Gay/Straight Alliances. The law simply reacts after the bullying happens. What we need is a preventative solution. Stop waiting for the out-of-touch greybeards in the legislature to come up with solutions. Half of them don't even want to help, and the other half are wielding the wrong tools. - Chris LeBeouf

Chano, I can form my own informative statement, but I tend to ask lots of questions, so I can determine whether or not the statements I often see posted are informative or just plain BS. Here's another question: What exactly do you mean about 'Watch that car?' - Dudley E. LaBauve, III

Bullys keep so busy intimidating those different from themselves for they have so little going for them and bullying is their only means of gaining attention and standing out from others, this rebelious insane reasoning only widens the equality gap from the bully to the productive student, this is also a modo learnt from our leaders who go around the world obliterating small Flintstone nations. - chano leal

By the way, do you remember the role of Hall Monitor? Does that not even exist anymore or is illegal or something these days? Maybe each school could rally a group of Bully Monitors at each school, who will report instances of bullying against ANY child to administrators. - Dudley E. LaBauve, III

Last year, Mother Jones reported a “teen epidemic of suicide” in Rep. Michele Bachmann’s small Minnesota district, where, in a two-year span, nine children committed suicide

Is Michelle Bachmann really responsible for this? That's what the statement eludes to.

Does anyone have data on all teen suicides nationwide and in what districts these suicides occurred? ....the size of the districts?....teen suicides per capita?....and the district representative's party affiliation?

I knew I was gay at the age of 11, but I knew that it was not wise to come out at that moment because I was already teased enough just for being smart. I stand in alliance with Garsaud. - Paul Kleinpeter
