Mr. Morgan had a tremendous gift of teaching. He had the wonderful ability to critique in the best sense of the word. He created an atmosphere of serenity where you had no reservations getting involved in his lesson. He did this so matter of factly that you never realized what is happening. Suddenly you are the gesture model and you are moving around the class like an uninhibited dancer. The first day of his class, you did not want him to see what you were working on. By the end the semester you felt like you are the only one in the class. He put you at ease and made the unknown known. I was fortunate to have Mr. Morgan for two semesters when I arrived at USL from California. I recall Mr. Morgan telling me how to draw by not drawing. By gesture, by seeing with my mind and letting my hand do the work, by never picking up the pencil, by looking at shades and forms that make up what we were drawing, by taking away any pencil that had an eraser. It made no sense. I can remember my brain hurting as I flexed my mind to try to comprehend what he was trying to teach me. Inherently I knew what he said was important, if i could just understand. Somewhere in that first semester, the light went on for me. I believe my AH HA moment was due to his warmth, his patience and his generosity. I still have my sketch books from his classes and beyond and to this day can see the improvement he was able to draw out of me. Thank you Mr. Morgan. - Joe Kelly, fomer student
