Okay. Public discussion is needed. Great! That means we all have the opportunity to stand up and tell our elected officials how much we value our fire fighters and how eager we are to see them earn a reasonable wage. Democracy is not a spectator sport, folks. Time to get involved. - Kim

JoDu? You're really trying to pin that nickname on him? Kind of weak. What's wrong with Durel? - Anon

Firefighters and police stood to get raises had William Theriot's ordinance earlier this Summer passed. Take the annual $450k per year appropriated to NON-GOVERNMENT Organizations and use it to pay Fire and Police, or to hire more much needed first responders.

Ooops...can't do that. Maria Placer and Gerd Wuestemann will start crying on KPEL again. - Taxpayer

I'm very happy Mr. Durel has taken this bold step. The Fire Dept raise means that everyone above that would have to have raises also, according to how much time they have in and their rank. I think it would result in more dollars going out than coming in, and I absolutely will not support any additonal tax increases. Since revenue is down, I think its wise to hold off on raises. Fire Dept personnel get a mandated raise every year, no matter what the budget, so they'll get a raise and the govt has to find those bucks somewhere. - Myric6

It is a relief to see this process come to a head in such a clear and conciliatory manner. This is the way the public's business should be conducted. - Relieved

Great. Firefighters can't get a raise, however LUS electrical white collar workers got a large raise and then said they need to raise rates. Regarding GPS, the Dept of Agriculture vehicles goes all over the state, so one could expect significant savings, sounds like a goofy Data processing department, not IT idea. Next they will say they need more personnel/money. - Voodoo Science
