What seems to have been overlooked and screams to be addressed is A) the foot print of four of his houses is equal to or less than a 2200 square foot, 3 Bdrm,2 bath contemporary modern all electric energy hog ranch. And B) why is it incumbent on a citizen/developer to improve an abandoned (for all intents and purposes) drainage ditch?? The foot print of four such homes would affect drainage about as much as the lunar landing affected weather change. It's ludicrous and assinine and worse, it's another jackass excuse to put a kibash on "different" development. I didn't know Lynn Guidry lived in a shack? Poor fella. - jimbo

Young Mr. Ortego deserves lots of credit for trying to build within Carencro and near less desireable homes to boot... but the City Council did the right thing: they APPROVED his subdivision plat and required him to make drainage improvements in his immediate vicinity. Every (good) subdivision code in the country requires this kind of improvement. Had Ortego studied city planning instead of architecture, he would understand this. I don't know about Carencro politics in the past, but the commentators above who see this as a good ole boy decision have it backwards: granting Ortego a waiver of drainage improvements would have been the typical Louisiana back scratch way. That's what got us into this mess and why our cities and towns look like train wrecks. Adopt some (reasonable) rules and then follow them. And if the rest of Carencro's public drainage system is shot, then I guess "Jimmy" would support a tax increase to fix it. You can have low taxes or a drainage system that works — not both. I would vote for a working drainage system.

This sounds like a Rochon move.I knew he was a snake before he was fired from Lafayette. Didnt know that Mayor Braseaux had hired him.

How would I get in touch with Ortego if I wanted him to design me a house like that? - Johnson Paul

After reviewing the article once again and looking at the intense discussion over the issues here, it seems the bigger deal here is the development of Carencro has been inhibited by the apparent "good 'ol boys" typical Louisiana brainless leadership. I commend Mr. Ortego on his attempt to reverse years of mismanaged tax money and poor local government decisions via confronting the local government. I would be willing to assist him and/ or run with him in a local race opposing the current city administration. - John_K

Good citizen, nice job throwing the insults! First you say Mr. Ortego has a "a history of lies and duplicity" without any proof (what kind of history can a 25 year old have?), then you call the Progressive home he is building "an outhouse." He isn't trying to force anything on you, just trying to improve his beloved hometown.

There is a reason the rest of the cities in Lafayette Parish have doubled in size over the past ten years and Carencro has not. That is because of a lack of leadership. - Better Citizen

Bravo Mr Ortego. Remember, there are many communities and people that live in those communities that would welcome your vision and your LID approach. It is only the beginning for you. Keep truckin'. - Bayou Dweller

I work for the city and am disgusted by their actions against Steven and things they have been doing the past few days:
1. Lloyd runs the city of Carencro and hates change. He has made sure to oppose Stephen at every turn. In the office he calls Stephen things like ‘fruit’ and ‘Mr. Movie Star.’ Hes just a bully.
2. Glenn is not a very smart man and listens to Lloyd like he is the mayor and Glenn is too clueless to know hes being used
3. Lloyd has been posting on this site aginst Steven as Good Citizen, Show me the money, and right way. He knows the article tells the truth and is worried about loosing his job because of it. I know because hes been bragging about telling the truth about that ‘fruit.’ He is going around town looking for dirt to post here.
4. Glenn and the city counsil oppose Stephen because it hates new development. They are worried about losing in the next election. New residents mean new voters who would seen how incopetent the current adminstration is. People like Glenn who have been in city government forever don’t want to lose there good pay and travel perks.
5. Carencro is nearly bankrupt and that is why it cant do its own ditches. The city needs an audit. - Working in Carencro

I went by Ortego's house today. It looks like an oversized outhouse! I don't know about you, but I want a little bit more for my money. if he likes it, thats fine with me, but don't try to force it on me. - Good citizen!

For all of you hate mongers who have nothing better to do, try a little kindness instead of your feeble attempt to hurt our city. I've worked and lived here for over forty years and this is the first time i have seen such hatred and unlessness in an attempt to make money. Go pray! - Good old boy

Just have to mention two things that are in one of the photos. Mr. Ortego's sofa is on wheels, and the sofa is sitting in the kitchen. Lemme roll over and get a beer out of fridge, and then lay down and watch TV. - Cajunhiker

How do I reach Mr. Ortego?

I have worked on the Brad Pitt project also. I think what Ortego is trying to do is outstanding and wish a builder in Lafayette would follow his example. - Louisiana Solar Solutions

Now we know where Jimmy hangs out looking for his leadership. if you want to find our Mayor don't look in the bars. Go homeJimmy, and get some rest, go to church one of these days. its very likely if you go on a saturday or sunday you will see our Mayor. Jimmy, you are full of hatred and need to get some help. Good people are hard to find these days and it is truly unfortunate that this ortego situation is bringing out the cockroaches. - Good old boy Jimmy

"Seems like someone wanted to turn a quick buck and did'nt want to do it the right way. Thanks to Mayor Brasseaux and city council for looking out for us."

Yes thank you for squandering our tax money and not fixing drainage leading to our homes being destroyed by flooding. - Jimmy
