Move the downtown library and use it for government offices. The downtown library is a magnet for bums and other riff-raff which puts children in danger. - Andrei Tsygankov

Let me get this straight, Durel wants to tear down the federal court house and give it to LEDA to subsidize the building of something that the market place has proven will only loose more money the they are lossing on LITE. That's the plan? - HELPUSALL

Durel is not allowed to transfer the title of the federal courthouse, well he needs to give the council a few tax free perks to sway their votes, thats the ""CAJUN WAY ! Why should durel not be allowed his

There's a taxing district downtown isn't there? That's what DDA is. They collect a special extra tax based on the "downtown" area, how is that money not spent to support security? Just askin'

Yeah, that's right. If the problem is underage kids, then bust the bars. If the problem is vagrants then bust the vagrants. If the problem is out of towners, then bust the out of towners. But how the Chief gets to charge a fee for it is hard to understand. I'm starting to wonder if the real criminals downtown aren't the cops. They've already beat up a restauranteur. Now they're charging money for protection?

I live on the southside, I'm already taxed to the gills. I can't afford a single dollar more. I don't want more police protection, more police in my neighborhood, or higher fees for police protection. Let the cops police downtown! My neighborhood is just fine the way it is. - ragin_cajun

MOMMY DEAREST, I think the chief is looking for headlines, he keeps crankin that ole noisy organ about the security downtown. The club/bar owners are not crying about secruity in their establishments, its a very well known fact, that the problems exist away from the clubs/bars mainly on city property, the dimly lit streets surrounding JEFFERSON STREET...... JEFFERSON STREET itself, and the sidewalks, which is definitely LAFAYETTE CITY property, therefore the city is responsibile for security in these areas, and all areas within the the city.
During festivals/ mardi gras festivities, etc, does the city force the clubs/bars throughout lafayette to pay for police protection, to prevent muggins, breakins $ RAPES, of course not. No the chief does not have the power/authority to charge the taxpayers who pay for police prtotection thru taxes, an added charge at any given time, whether, it be on a friday/saturday night in the downtown area, or on any night any where in this city...............

If its so safe Downtown then Mr. Selvin is right and we shouldn't charge the bars. Tell Chief Craft to send all those Officers over to the south side of Lafayette where we admit that we have cars being broken into. And let Downtown live with the environment they have created and quit asking for help. - mommy
