Don Bertrand has got to go! Vote after vote, more money, more planning, more "quality of life", and "you just don't understand city-parish government". Election day can't come soon enough! - ragin_cajun

I am NO fan of bureaucrats and think Lafayette should put MOST out to pasture. Terry Huval, however, has done an excellent job in running a great facility. LUS' response time, preparedness, etc are incredible. It was time for an increase, and economic/equipment conditions that allowed LUS to make money in the past do NOT exist now. We can pay now or sit around in the dark during the next hurricane. People who complain WILL complain no matter WHEN/How-Much the cost increases. - Wake up and look at the facts

Shelvin and Boudreaux seem to have this right. This was very sudden. We go from lots of surplus and "Hey look at how much we give back to Lafayette Government" to suddenly being weeks or months away from having to boil water? What gives? How does that happen? I think the answer lies in another question that doesn't seem to have gotten asked -- "How is Fiber doing?"

Isn't LUS loaning money to the Fiber program to the tune of millions? Didn't LUS take over part of the cost of Fiber's Pinhook storefront location to ease the overrun that was on Fiber's books? The answer to those questions is YES. And I suspect that is just the tip of the iceberg regarding what Fiber costs have been "shifted" to LUS such that LUS is now in such dire straits.

For those keeping score - since Fiber passed, we've seen water rates double or triple for some and now a 15% increase on the power side.

It is a simple premise ... you raise the rates on the utilities and services you have a monopoly on in order to stay competitive in the area you don't have a monopoly over. But the folks who warned this would happen in order to try and keep the "low cost fiber" promise were just anti-Lafayette haters, right?

Congrats Mr. Huval! Hook, line and sinker!

All the best,

Soop - Soop

Hooray! On second thought, if Huval was such a good manager then why wasn't he pushing smaller increases years ago. - Mikhail Kalashnikov
