One last comment, its WAY past time to get away from using "slave mentality" excuses. Jeeezzz, it was in the 1800s. If we can't ever get past that, if we can't quit referencing that as an excuse for criminal acts, then there's no reason to try to make a better community. I did not say forget it or ignore. Its history. But there have been way too many black citizens who worked way too hard to better their people, their heritage, their community and its more important and more productive to remember them. - Morrow

To "Vested in Louisiana AND Lafayette," I have no idea where you came up with the $50,000 for Williams, as the story indicates that Williams was making about $84,000 on the LHA. Specifically, since I now have records from the LHA, he was paid $82,000 from Oct. 1, 2009, to Aug. 13 of this year. That's $82,000 in 10.5 months. So he would have actually received more than $88,000 had the contract not been canceled. - Leslie Turk

Morrow,
If you are infering that Chris Williams is a black overseer, and used his influence and position to get Walter Guillory to "hire" him and get paid without working, then I will concede your point. However, explain to me why Walter Guillory was paid over 250K in 2009 and Chris Williams only earned around 50K for the position that he held with LHA. If these salaries are accurate as stated in this paper, then wouldn't that make Walter Guillory the "overseer"?

Lone Ranger, I am going to post your observation on KATC blog site to give it more visibility. I woulf recommend that you contact Chuck Hubener and run that by him.

Incidentally, Ms. Turk seems to be a crack reporter for the Independent, let tug on her coat to see what she thinks.

Why didn't Joey take Donald Fusilier off the board? If he had done that it wouldn't look so political. Lets connect the dots. Rickey job was to cut Donald's grass at his law office in New Iberia, then Walter hires him at the LHA. A few months later Walter fires him. Rickey supports Joey for parish president. He ask Joey to appoint Donald to the board of commissioners of the housing authority. Joey takes all his appointees off the board but Donald.

Dear Morrow:
Your line of thinking and statement about "Laf native living in CA" is outdated. Anyone who has an interest in the community and offers some sound advice should be heard. This person may not live in Lafayette but may own property in the area which means that he/she is still paying taxes in Louisiana AND in California. Or, he/she may still have family living in the area, even District 44 which Representative Ricky Hardy represents, and paying taxes. Therefore, please consider or know all of the facts before going on the attack. The energy we expend fighting each other can be better used to seek economic opportunities for the northside of Lafayette which will improve the quality of life in the area, including District 44, and increase (northside Lafayette) property values along with helping to increase equity in the homes.

As I stated in a previous comment, Willie Lynch---the man who taught slave owners how to control their slaves is dead and business is no longer being conducted on the (traditional) plantation. In other words, simply because our backs aren't bent over in the sun picking cotton or cutting cane any longer for "Mister"(before you go on the defensive---please know that I don't believe that there is nothing wrong with picking cotton or cutting cane; this is simply a metaphor), economic deprivation is the "new form of slavery and the "Misters" in the legislature (the new cotton/cane field") are the new masters.

If you review American history, specifically the era during slavery, you will find out that there were black overseers on some plantations and in a lot of instances they were more harsh that some of the white overseers. With that in mind, let's make sure that our (black)legislators aren't acting like their former overseeing ancestors and are appropriately representing the people they are elected to represent. - Vested in Louisiana AND Lafayette

I am glad to see that the article by Ms. Turk, Aug 18, 2010 entitled Self-Serving does not mention Mr. Hardy. That is a good thing. Maybe now he can focus on bringing jobs and industry to district 44. - LAF NATIVE RESIDING IN CA

CA needs to take care of things in CA or move back to LA and do a better job if Mr. Hardy is so bad. Rep Hardy represents more than just his district and has to work with the legislature to get programs to make all of Acadiana better. Its phd Williams, the crook, who's giving the place a nasty stink. And if you can do better, get back here. - Morrow

There you go again The Problem Is. Chris Williams' alleged wrong doings is a police matter.

Mr. Hardy's job is to legislate prosperity for his district. I see he's got you sufficiently misdirected. Don't worry though, I got your back. I see how naive you are. You're like the little baby that STARTING TU DAY reference in the Aug 17 comment.

I totally disagree with you The Original Northsidian. There is an old saying, "build it and they will come".

You are playing right into Mr. Hardy's trap. That is what he hope, that is that his constituents give up hope. He hopes that you guys focus on his slick campaign to point fingers and yell that the bogyman is gonna get you. He thrives so long as you admit defeat. That lets him off the hook.

Again, hold him accountable and make him bring business and industry to district 44. - LAF NATIVE RESIDING IN CA

Listen folks, the reality of the situation is no businessman or women worth their salt wants to move to district 44. No matter who the rep. is. Hardy, Pierre, Williams, or even Jesus himself. At least Hardy tells it like it is. In politics the cream does not rise to the top, the s*** floats!!
DITTO Vested in Louisiana AND Lafayette, DITTO. And once you let it be known to Mr. Hardy that you are not falling for his head fake-once you let him know that you will not be hoodwinked-then and only then will he begin to try and improve the lives of his constituents.

Its all about the constituents. Its all about district 44. - LAF NATIVE RESIDING IN CA

I don't know what all of the hoopla is all about. But, one thing for sure, this end fighting is just what south Lafayette wants. As long as the north side of town is distracted by accusations, allegations and name calling, they can move south side projects ahead.

Everyone who has lived in Lafayette and the surrounding areas have heard about or know Chris Williams and Ricky Hardy. So their characters have already been defined. Therefore, let's move forward with improving the north side of the city---have you noticed that we are closest to the major highways (I-10 and Evangeline Thruway) but don't have any significant businesses or decent hotels that attract tourists or passerbys to stop and stay for a while? Therefore, my recognition is that Dr. Chris Williams, teach your classes and continue your work with U. L.'s Special Student Services. Representative Ricky Hardy, start representing the interest of your district (District 44) and bring new---brand recognized businesses to the north side. Can't we all get along? After all, this is the 21st century, Willie Lyncy is DEAD and the plantation is out of business! - Vested in Louisiana AND Lafayette

Now now,The Problem Is. Stop with the melodrama.

Mr. Lilly is an honest man. Here is a public servant who paid his dues. When Rep Hardy was a high school drop out, Mr. Lilly was firmly entrenched in the classroom teaching people like you and me.

FOCUS The Problem Is, FOCUS.
