Insider , YOU are part of the problem !
" should anyone making a little bitty mistake " SUCH AS DENYING A DYING HUMAN BEING THEIR ASSISTANCE IN possibly saving the persons life ", should this officer of the law, " who pledged to protect and to serve, come out smelling like a rose after allowing himself to enter into the filthiest anti-humane cesspool, stand-by unfeeling and watch another human being die, for having his mind on sexual gratifacation. - NORTHSIDIAN SHOTGUN

When you go to bed tonight and a crack addict criminal kicks your door in and threatens to kill you or harm your family who will you be calling for help? You will be calling the very same police officer you put down on this forum and that officer will do his job and put his own life in harms way to protect and serve you, even though u feel the way you do about him it wont matter because police officers believe duty, honor, and courage still have meaning in this horrible world we live in today. Many officer have served their country and return home to serve their community as a police officer and they have given and sacraficed more then those that think otherwise. - Respect

At least now we have the two sides of the story. Now to answer some of the other questions about Public Safety Employee's (Police, Fire, EMS), but, particularly Police. Yes, it is a chosen profession, but how many people would go to work day after day, night after night, not knowing what they will encounter or if they will even survive their tour of duty. Working and away from family and friends on weekends, holiday, family events and staying behind for hurricanes while their families seek safety elsewhere.

Now for the pay and pension. Pension is thru the State of Louisiana Municipal Police Employee Retirement System. Once it is earned, it is earned and cannot be taken away. They accrue 3.3% per year of service, so at 30 years they recieve 99.9% of the last 3 years of their highest pay. Example, 30 years at $90,000 which is close to what a Major makes would be about $89,000 a year. If after his 30 years he goes on DROP for 3 years, he gets a lump sum of $267,000. If he has not taken sick leave during his career (even when he is sick, but still comes to work) and accrues 3200 hours in the 30 years, they are paid $140,800 lump sum from LCG.

Thru the years they have the same amount that a civilian puts taken out for the pension puts into Social Security, but have to contribute also to SS to get Medicaid and Medicare when they turn 65 years of age, because LCG drops them from coverage. By the way they have paid a portion of their insurance like everyone else even after they retire.

Should a person lose all he has sacrificed for for 30+ years for a mistake or misunderstanding? I think not. Too many people have jumped to conclusion without all the facts and allowed yet again someone to be tried and convicted by the media. Allow the investigation to conclude before you condemn a person.

You guys have made the argument for not privatizing SS, Medicare as well as for puting strong regulations on private industry.

See, Guys like Major Dartez makes out like a bandit while ordinary folks have their 401K and social security stolen by right wing lunes. - SENSIBLE POLITICS

What kind of reporting is this? The Independent should be telling us how much money this guy will rake in every month as his retirement.

Shouldn't we know exactly what we have not been paying for for all these years. - SENSIBLE POLITICS

citizen--

"Cops don't get paid crap" -- I disagree. They START at $40,000 per year, free health and life insurance, and a pension. They get over 2 weeks a year vacation, to start, and there are many fringe benefits.

Many UL graduates will make less their first year out of college, and they will have student loans to repay. Entry level IT workers, with certification, will make about the same salary and pay alot for health insurance, 401(k), etc. - ragin_cajun

first comment: law enforcement USED to not make good money, but THEY DO NOW! And buddy, let me tell you they won't walk onto a security job for less than $25 and hour and that includes RESERVE officers who get to keep the money! THEN, anyone with bars or stripes gets WAY more money that! Also, their health insurance might be paid for; it used to be, and the family could be added at a reduced rate than you or I would pay... So don't kid yourself, they're bringing home very decent pay checks. - BoFred

Actually, the retirement system that governs our PD is quite lucretive. Not to mention that our local police are NOT underpaid for what they do. I am tired of this crying by local civil service employees who chose their career path! No one forced you to be a policeman. You CHOSE to be a policeman! You knew the pay and benefits going in. If you feel slighted, you are POST certified so leave. Move to another location, find a new career or both.

There are firemen in this city making money hand over fist who will retire having never fought a one, two, three, or four alarm blaze. That, in many respects is a good thing, but they're getting paid, and paid pretty good with many perks, to be ready. And they still bitch. - True dat!

Yea, well, you get what you pay for.

Cops don't get paid crap, and so you end up with crappy people on the police force.

I mean really, what do you expect?

Ahem ! I am talking a crafty move here, like in Carte Blanc via a brown nosing craft. - NORTHSIDIAN SHOTGUN
