There were plenty of temporary trashcans! The idea that people should toss down and expect things picked up later is disgusting. How about starting some slogans to remind the crowd, like "Let's keep it free; free of trash so we never charge admission" or something... Likewise, the average business with a parking lot that thinks it's ok to simply hire a sweeper once a week needs an attitude adjustment to continuous cleaning. I'm not an attorney, but there's a thing called "spot zoning". "the relationship between the zoning change and the local government's stated land use policies and objectives" is the key thing that judges look at when deciding cases of invalid spot zoning. Are there not MANY examples of current and past city officials stating "entertainment" is the land use policy and objective in the downtown area? Now to start passing ordinances, levies, and rules counter to that stated goal..... Bars are a business, like most others, that require time and borrowed money to become profitable. To have government come along after a year or so and just change its mind about the location of a business you've been working to build for years is just plain wrong. First it was strip clubs, and everyone agreed that was OK. Now a few years later, it's regular bars downtown, what's next? Maybe your business? Smoking bans were a good idea to most people, so now we have one, and what's next? Food bans are coming now...exercise quotas one day, maybe? Sounds good so far. The idea of speed vans and traffic light cameras is good; it's just that out of state company making millions off our backs that's the problem. Sure, banning the go cups probably is probably more of a discouragement tactic rather than a solution, but I believe most other civilized towns don't allow people to leave the bar with alcohol in hand. Didn't you read the IND's article of Rob Robinson's letter to Durel and the Mayor's response? YOU are the problem. The problem is not vagrants who hang around Downtown. The problem is not certain social non-profits who encourage habitual drug users and people with criminal records to come into Lafayette from all parts of the state, so their federal subsidies can increase with numbers. The problem is only you and the other bar owners. The bars are the main thing that revitalized Downtown, but everyone needs to forget that now. To my knowledge we are the only state that allows this practice. And if you think 21 year old's and above or not buying alcoholic beverages and carrying them outside to underage drinkers I got some ocean front property in Kansas to sell you! As far as the business owners are concerned I understand that it is a challenge to operate a business and to have to face this every morning when they arrive the next morning but this is the type of environment that was allowed to be created in our Downtown by years of bars and restaurants being allowed to proliferate. But as with most issues that we face this is a total overreaction. Isn't there a jail downtown with a crap load of trustees that have nothing to do on the weekends. I am pretty sure that littering is against the law. How about writing some tickets. Aren't we making more money now that we have red light cameras. If that is the case, then we can take a couple of the excess traffic cops and have them undercover downtown writing littering tickets.......... How about if the bar owners can have go cups, but those go cups have to have the bar's logo and name on them. That way, next morning, you can clearly see which club's cups are all over the street. Or how about if the city just pays a cleaning crew to go down there and clean it all up the next morning. There's alot of tax proceeds coming in from these bars, there's a special police levy coming in, too.
