Listen folks, Bustle was in a division that he should not have been in. It was not his choice. The football team is there only to make money, not win. If it was about winning why in the hell would they schedule a game against LSU? What kind of message do you think it sends to the players. I can tell you the message: It is go get your ass kicked so we can make money! If anyone disagrees with me I want to hear their side of the story!! And don't give me the "we want to play in state schools" excuse!! - The Original Northsidian

I don't think the Ind is acting improper or being speculative in their assertions about Coach Bustle's job. The fact that his home is on the market would naturally lead some to think that he is not going to be hanging around town. The bottom line in any sport no matter what level is you have to win in order to keep your job.
A blind man could see that Bustle's job is on the line. His contract is up this year and it only makes sense for the university to make a change.
I doubt that he is going to get a contract extension along with a hefty pay increase which would then explain why he would be selling his home to move into a larger more expensive home....nope he is definitely downsizing.
Look at it on the positive side if this is the case at least the university respected him enough to give him a heads up...allow him to finish out the season...and enough time to sell his home.
And it will give UL fans an opportunity to get behind another coach like we did with Bustle and hopefully have a winning program. - Joe Politico

Bustle is out. Louie Cook, though a great high school coach, only has limited university level coaching experience at then USL. Some boosters are looking at a now available former Southern Miss coach. He has a wealth of collegiate experience. He is also sought after by North TX St. UL and Southern Miss have the same economic situation, only this coach was successful at Southern Miss. Take Cook out of his high school element and you have a recipe for disaster at UL. Once again. - The Watcher

Crazy Bustle protectors want to pretend Bustle is staying and can't handle people knowing he quit on this team. It's pubic knowledge people, go pick on some other paper.
Have to agree with many of the other posters. This article is tacky and unnecessary. Guess The Ind. couldn't wait for UL or Coach Bustle to make an announcement...couldn't risk being "scooped" by the competition, instead you have stooped to putting out this tasteless and insensitive article. You scraped the bottom of the barrel here. Shame! - Knowledge is Power

Mr BUSTLE'S COACHING RECORD IS INDICATIVE OF THE LACK OF PREMIUM QUALITY HIS PLAYERS POSSESS, A COACH CAN ONLY DELIVER THE GOODS, if his squad possesses the potential to win and produce a winning record.
It is beyond reasoning that any coach in the collegiate level would want to land a coaching job at a school such as UL, but as for the somewhat sucess of the softball teams, really the game gate receipts would not cover the utility lights cost of the ball park. - NORTHSIDIAN SHOTGUN

I called "The Independent", a "tabloid" in a post a couple of weeks ago. This article provides even more substance to my claim. A guy like Coach Bustle who has been a fixture in this community, is being treated like "crap", by your so called paper. Everyone knows, Bustle will not be retained at UL, so why is selling his home a story? Maybe because your "lame" newspaper seeks to kick folks when they are down. I have to believe Bustle is doing the right thing by selling his home. Would you want to be in a community where people such as those who work for this tabloid, take joy in publicizing that a person is losing their job. - beheard

bustle is gone, and its time. he's had 9 years here at UL and while he should be commended for inheriting arguably the worst divsion 1 football program in the country and bringing them to respectability within their conference, it is time for new leadership.

I won't argue with the "apathetic" assertion of most local fans, but the statement that we "rarely muster more than 15,000" is just plain inacurrate. check the facts. - marine dude

@Walter...you're DELUSIONAL...this is total GOSSIP. As an alum of UL, I can tell you just how much my mind is on UL football... They need to GET real and drop to Division II or III....this program has been an embarrassment for YEARS. If you think Bustle and his family are honorable, classy people who deserve privacy while he begins to make transitions then QUIT printing articles like this. We're better than THIS and I hope that you will see that YOU are too! - queenbee

Borderline stalker material? You're kidding right, "Desperate for material?"?
We didn't list his street address, only his street, and he's in the friggin' phone book!
A lot of people in this city give a damn about Ragin Cajun football, myself included. Isn't the fact that the home of the head coach — a coach whose team is 2-8 with two games remaining and who has an overall winning percentage below .400 — is on the market cause for speculation?
Rickey Bustle is a class act, and we wish him the best whether he remains head coach or moves on. His future at UL is on a lot of people's minds.
We're not desperate for material; that's great material for public dialogue. - Walter Pierce

You really have nothing else to right about then posting this man's personal address in a news article? wow that is a bit desperate and paparazzi like, borderline stalker material.

If this were my job, I'd be embarassed I even published this article. - Desperate for material?

I agree with queenbee. This MLS listing is fodder for sports talk radio, not news. The egg timer is obviously ticking on Coach Bustle's job at UL. By all accounts, he is an honorable man and if his employment is in fact terminated at the end of his contract, he will certainly have left the football program in much better shape than he found it. And Cajunhiker, be careful what you wish for. North Texas tried the "hire a very successful high school coach" route when they hired Todd Dodge from Southlake Carroll about five years ago. Dodge never won more than two games in his first three seasons at UNT, which fired him in October with a 1-6 record in his fourth season. He finished with overall record of 6-37 for a winning percentage of .139, the worst in the history of major team sports at the school.

I was wondering when our community would start the conversation on replacing Bustle. Could you update this article with the terms of his contract?
It's obvious to everyone that it's time for a change in coaching at UL, apparently even to Bustle as evidenced by his house being for sale.

The next obvious decision is his replacement: Louie Cook, coach at Notre Dame High School in Crowley.
Cook stated in an Advertiser article several years ago that he wanted to coach high school football at least until his son graduated. Well, his son Stuart is a senior player at Notre Dame, and a recruting prospect for college scouts.
Cook also has won several high school state championships and is well respected among his peers, which gives him an edge for recruiting high school prospects.
More importantly, Cook has college-level experience at UL. He was offensive coordinator for UL when Jake Delhomme and Brandon Stokely were playing at UL.
Mr. Walker should make Cook an offer he can't refuse. - Cajunhiker
