Discovering a loved one had a life insurance policy can be another source of unclaimed property. Life insurance companies depend on family members to notify them when a policy holder dies. The problem is, not everyone tells their family about the policy thinking the insurance company will notify the beneficiary and it will be a surprise. It doesn't work that way.
The Louisiana Department of Insurance site has useful tips for determining if someone had a life insurance policy and whom it was through. Go to
www.ldi.la.gov/Licensing/Life_Annuities/Life_Annuity_before_submit_request.htm
You can search for policies that were issued in Louisiana and then contact the insurance company for further information. The site cannot be used to search for policies that were not purchased in Louisiana. You will need the deceased’s social security number and date of death when you call. - Mary Pitman
