I grew up in Eunice in 60s when Lake View Park was in its heyday.

My family and extended family visited Lake View Park frequently. Mr. Fred as we knew him was the brother of my Aunt, Rena Dupre, who worked for Mr. Fred in the record and music area of Bellow's Furniture, and my uncle Chick Dupre also worked for Mr. Fred servicing the many juke-boxes and other vending machines that Mr. Fred owned and were placed in various business places and places of entertainment all around the Eunice area.

Our parents danced and partied in the dance hall while we kids frolicked in the pool of the man-made "beach," paddled around the lake in canoes, jon-boats, or the two-seat paddle boats. The pool had a diving board, slide, and floating platform. The "deep" end was marked by a rope with floats and there were tables and chair placed around, mostly on the LA 13 side of the pool. Mr. Fred keep the bottom and "beach" around the pool covered in sand as white as could be found in Louisiana.

The sound of Cajun, swamp-pop and rock music from the juke-box inside the dance hall could be heard throughout the campground, pool, and lake area...thanks to loudspeakers hung on trees all over the place.

It was an idyllic place, in an idyllic time, for a young Cajun boy like me,and before the war in Viet Nam intruded on our Paradise and we began losing our friends and school mates in the jungles of South Viet Nam.

I have lived in or near Tallahassee, FL, since ending my four year Naval tour of duty in 1973. When "back home" visiting my family and friends, I drove out to Lake View a number of times over the years. I was saddened when it closed and fell into disrepair....but my fond memories of the Park and friendships made there stay fresh in my mind.

I was forwarded this story via email by Susan and Soybean Fontenot, who still live in Eunice and have been friends since "back in the day." Thanks Susan and Soy for sending this story to me.

I plan on going to Lake View the next time I'm in Eunice. - Phil Fusilier, Tallahassee, FL

Great story! I've had a tour of the park and it is like the article says: Magical. Reminiscent it is of happy, almost childlike, carefree days, quaint, cajun, hard to find feelings. Please continue with your vision. - D Rozas
