No, to your question, but yes to the TIFs. Government should provide a level playing field but TIFs disrupt this by giving an advantage to one business over another.

Dr. you are SO right! I worked as a sales clerk for the Ostrich's @ La Parisienne. It was so degrading. We were treated with such disdain. I will admit the employee discount was fantastic though, half off or cost. But the only visions they had were dollar bills in their pockets. I finally got my degree & left & never shopped there again. - Exretailshopgirl

There are so many typical small minded comments on this forum. People like Mr. Melancon who are just convinced that there is a government scheme behind EVERY decision made. Thank heavens for people like Joey Durel, Keith Patin and Gregg Gothreaux! These are people with vision; people who don't just look at what is good for Lafayette today or next week; they are looking ahead to next year, five years and ten years down the road.

Alot of thought goes into these projects. Market studies, economic studies and feasibility studies. No one wants this venture to fail so ALOT of time and effort goes into these decisions. Lafayette was built by visionaries and risk takers like the Heymanns, the Abdallas and many, many others. Playing it safe may make people feel more comfortable but it will NOT move Lafayette forward!! - Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is Power "who will be going to this 5-star hotel. Will it be you or me paying that extra tax??? Probably not...
-------------------

Yes, you may not pay it directly but it increases the cost of doing business in Lafayette.

This way of thinking happens around the country by trying to shift taxes to non-residents. What happens is when we travel, we pay the additional special taxes for hotels. So, Lafayette residents pay taxes for other governments and out-of-town visitors pay ours.

You might call it a government scheme by stealth tax.

First he said people should "take ownership of improving our community”.

"This is a perfect use of tax dollars because everyone in our community will benefit from such a wonderful 'Central Park,' and no one person should feel responsible for 'buying' it," Durel wrote there.

“The council also approved a resolution to apply to the State Bond Commission for permission to sell up to $6 million in Certificates of Indebtedness to fund the City-Parish takeover of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette's Horse Farm Property.”

FYI: it is $6 million in CITY OF LAFAYETTE CERTIFICATES OF INDEBTEDNESS being sold ONLY.

It appears only the City of Lafayette persons “should feel responsible for 'buying' it”.

How about a PARISH wide TIFF district to fund PARISH BONDS for the new community “Central Park” “because everyone in our community will benefit” instead of just selling $6 million in “City of Lafayette backed Bonds?

Seems as though everyone has an opinion. I see the same negative comments from the same people with an ax to grind. Thank goodness YOU'RE not in government because nothing would ever get done. Hey at lease Mr. Patin is trying. He's asking for opinions; but some of you have formed your opinions and you're not even sure what you're talking about. It's still a free country. Why not try and run for city council next election if you can stand the heat and have all the answers. - Bovine Waste aka Bullshipper

I can't exactly tell you why this smells, but it does. I don't have time to research this completely. TIFs were supposed to be to encourage development in areas that were falling to let's say "urban decay". Like to revitalize downtown. If the program was changed & now allows for financing the wealthiest area of the city, they shame on whomever did it and shame on those who let it happen. Shame on those corporations taking advantage of it & who probably have given campaign donations or business opportunities to gain what they have. THERE IS A LIABILITY TO THE TAXPAYER SOMEWHERE, of that you can be sure of. THIS IS A TAX, whatever you say its for. I'm not a Repub. I'm not a Tea pot. I'm a person, of a certain age, who's seen the public get screwed enuf to know there's a screwing brewing. Joe Citizen, get the KY ready! I PERSONALLY DONT GIVE A RAT'S APPLE ABOUT ANYONE WHO THINKS LAFAYETTE HOTELS AREN'T LUXURIOUS ENUF FOR THIER DELICATE DERRIERES! I'd just as soon Laf not have people like that live here or visit here. AND I SURE DON'T WANT TO FINANCE IT or be responsible for it. And dont tell me I don't have to shop there, because I know that. I still don't like it or want it. And I've YET to see anything in RR I'm interested in. The parking there is crap anyway & I HATE FOLLOWING THE ILLEGAL GOLF CARTS!!! So I won't give any extra tax dollars to high fallutin big shots & I'd like for someone to challenge the new tax in court. Taxation by idiotic representation? I'm beginning to think Repubs are against taxation, unless its something THEY want. Less government unless its more govt THEY want..... - BeauPartae

Section 2-17 of the Charter seems to be clear that any increase in taxes is to be subject to voter approval. If this is the case, then the existing TIFs could be in jeopardy to a court challenge. - James Melancon

Risk,
Mistaken again! The 9 council persons will vote on the TIF. Mr Durel does not get a vote. So if you are not in favor of this project, you should voice your opinion to your representative. I have. - Positive attitude

People need to read the article, calm down and think before getting all worked up over this TIF. First, think about who will be going to this 5-star hotel. Will it be you or me paying that extra tax??? Probably not because why would WE stay in a hotel that is 2 miles from our house? Most of the people staying at the hotel (and thus paying the extra taxes) will be from out of town/state! Now, as far as the shops that will be in that development; is anyone forcing you to shop there? NO! It's not like we live in some podunk town and this development will have the ONLY grocery store or clothing store etc. If you don't want to pay the extra taxes then simply don't shop in that development! Go down the street and shop at the mall or get your groceries at Super One. Finally, let's be VERY honest here; if no one had told you about the TIF being in place, how many of you would have even noticed the extra tax being taken out? Whether you will admit it or not most of you WOULD NOT NOTICE!!! - Knowledge is Power

Interesting how positive attitude knows what the realtors and developers think. Guess he took a poll. But, it's not hard to figure. If government forces the citizens to pay for your private development thru sales tax and you walk away with millions - yep I guess that developers and realtors would love that. If we are gonna use a tax to pay for property and/or development it should be only for development or streets we own as a community. Other than that - the developer can pay his own expenses - like true developers do. - NoMoreTaxes

Risk.....check your facts. the city is not at risk, not even our bond rating. Everybody is not doing it because there are certain requirements set forth that have to be met, for example: the 5 star hotel.
If the developer does not meet the requirements, then there is no TIF. - Positive attitude
