Oh, how could I have missed the "convention center" part? I really feel negligent about that. My taxes paid for the REALLY NICE CONVENTION CENTER AT THE DOME and that's all I care to pay for or subsidize or support. Again, there are HUNDREDS OF NEW HOTEL ROOMS down that road and nearby roads. What about some sweetheart deals for them? They've invested in Lafayette without asking for special favors & I oppose kicking them in the teeth with a TIF in one of the wealthiest areas of the city. Is this another example of this area of town considering itself above and beyond the rest of us? - BeauPartae

Three cheers for " Opponent, " now if we can find another opponent to replace our local deputy dog Crafty Craft,
& DA Double AA, HIC Harson, we'll call it the "Community Brew Tea. Take that to the bank.

Joey Durel and his “rubberstamp” council (except Theriot and Bellard) as well as his boy Greg Gothreaux of LEDA as well as the Chamber of Commerce, are all about spending and taxing, and if you are against it you are an “idiot”. What arrogance and stupidity. You can’t buy prosperity. If a project doesn’t makes sense, government money to prop it up will only undermine everyone else. I can’t figure out whether they are corrupt or just stupid. - al

If Patin has competition for re-election- we can bank on everyone of the other 8 having it as well! I expected it for the Parish Boyzzzzz---looks like a long election seasson ahead of us. I am glad Patin is bringing more info to us on the TIF, DR.Stewart, and opening up communication with the Tea Party. The passion of this issue is a clear example of the climate in our country. We all need to look both ways like Patin. It would be nice to see any opponent to Patin talk about their qualifications and attributes rather than do negative campaigning as OPPONENT is suggesting-- he may be laughing- but none of these current issues are laughing matters. - Parish Pal

All TIFs are loopholes. TIFs place one private business above others. In short, TIFs are legal corruption, instead of bribing officials (under the table) they give a tax benefit while maintaining the aura of economic development. - James Melancon

Already heard of two people running against Patin. How do you think that push card will read - My opponent and his developer friend thinks you're an idiot/lunatic. I don't. Vote for ME :) My opoponent thinks you should dedicate a tax called a TIF to his friend to pay for his fancy hotel. I don't. Vote for ME :). My opponent voted to increase your taxes 10 times. I won't - Vote for ME :) My opponent is a lap dog for the mayor. I'm not. Vote for ME :) My opponent swtich to the republican party right before he ran. I've been a republican for 35 years. If you want the real thing, vote for ME :) Less Tax, Less Government, Pro Life. Back to Basics. - Opponent

The the developer opens the meeting by calling everyone in the room "idiots". Wow that's a real welcoming place. glad i didn't go.
Haha. Could you guys please use all-caps a little more please?

General points here. Focus on the points, and compromise. Why must there be sides and names? Really. I think it's time for a political coup..the way people are now a days.

Hahah. Tea Party. Pfft. Louisiana has a lot of issues. Keep up the work and citizenry everybody and maybe you'll improve your numerous weaknesses and weak biz/education atmosphere. - Caps a Lot

FYI
Lafayette Parish currently has 6 TIF districts, two created by Lafayette Consolidated Government, with the other four in Broussard, Carencro and Scott. For example, you are already paying extra sales taxes if you shop at Wal-Mart or Home Depot in Broussard.

If people live within a proposed TIF district, an election must be held. If the proposed TIF district is vacant property, the LCG Council only has to vote to create a TIF district.

Our State Treasurer John Kennedy, a fiscal conservative, likes TIFS as intended, for blighted areas and unique opportunities, but not for national big box store chains which would build a store with or without a TIF if a profit could be made, i.e., not for what Lafayette has done with the Target store along I-10.

I just read today about another hotel development in Baton Rouge asking for special treatment, just as another hotel development was given. ITS TRUE, IF YOU GIVE IT TO ONE, YOU HAVE TO GIVE IT TO ANOTHER!!! There are a coupla new hotels going up not too far, why weren't they offered this sweetheart deal? I believe the taxpayers, the voters, are saying they don't want the govt to give this development any special taxes. I'm no tea potter, but I'm not in favor of it. I don't give a rat's apple about the tea potters or this developer & I surely don't buy into the propaganda being used to sell this. Lafayette doesn't need more hotel space. Lafayette isn't losing business because we don't have ritzy enuf hotel and shopping space. AND THIS IS THE MOST WEALTHY AREAS OF LAFAYETTE & IT DOESN'T NEED TAX INCENTIVES FOR DEVELOPMENT. SHAME ON ANYONE WHO TRIES PROPAGANDA TO MAKE VOTERS BELIEVE THAT. I AM NO TEA POTTER, very far from it, but I don't like the misreprentation of this bogue scheme. - BeauPartae

CORIMA --

"not cost a dime to the city or those who choose not to go there." I heard Durel use that same logic from his soapbox on high at the City Council Meeting. So let's apply that same logic to other taxes. If you don't like TIF's shop elsewhere? I don't like high property tax rates, so I should move to another parish? I don't like higher sales tax, so when LCG or LPSB proposes that, are they gonna suggest I move to St. Martin Parish? I thought Lafayette wanted me here, that friendly Cajun Culture they're so hot to subsidize and all.

Businesses don't like high taxes, either. So unless they get preferential treatment, what if they choose to "vote with their steering wheel" and take their "sizzling steak" to some neighboring town or parish?

As for the farmers, students, green projects, oil, etc. Yeah, I heard similar logic when I called my Councilman about this. "Government gives preferential to business all the time". His statement, and yours, are both forms of the logical fallacy argumentum ad populum, or appeal to public opinion. Just because everybody believes does not necessarily make it right.

Are you suggesting that right and wrong are relative? What's wrong is acceptable if enough people do it? Is that it?

Sounds like a real charmer; knows how to win people over. A good candidate for the Dale Carnegie course.

It would better Lafayette, create jobs, and not cost a dime to the city or those who choose not to go there. Dr. Stewart is right, if you don't tike TIFS contact your legislator.
While at it, tell them you want to stop assistance for farmers, students, green projects, oil, - CORIMA
