BoFred

"just try raising property taxes or lowering my exemption!"

Start making up your sign right now, padnuh. The School Board is trying to decide as we speak whether to raise property taxes or sales taxes to get that BILLION dollars they need to fix the schools.

Reality Please...

" what will make a business want to locate here if they can't send their kids to decent schools?" Companies locate here everyday, and many of them don't even think about the schools. the ones that do look at schools before they locate here also take into account the quality of the PRIVATE schools in the area.

As for our university system, I am starting to wonder about those who insist that we can't cut government spending on universities in this state. RAISE TUITION!!! Louisiana probably has the lowest tuition in the country.

Let's all use our heads and think of ways to do things WITHOUT the government, and we won't need them so much, and we won't need to pay higher taxes. THAT'S THE ANSWER!

It's how your grandparents did it. - ragin_cajun

Whoever called Moon a loon is right on. Moon rails that Stelly lied when he said the tax increase would be revenue neutral. What Stelly said — and I was at a forum in Lake Charles when Moon debated the plan with Stelly — was that his plan would be revenue neutral IN THE FIRST YEAR. Stelly was wrong. In the first year, it actually brought in less money than the sales tax it replaced. However, any tax that is based on income will never be revenue neutral. When people's salaries rise, so do the amount of taxes they pay. Moon must have slept through his Economic 101 classes at NLU ... that is if he ever bothered to go to class. Shakespeare had Moon in mind when he wrote "told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." - BobbyD

Help....I fallen and I can't get up. I just want to know one thing...why does Texas have better schools and better roads than Louisiana. And why ain't Texas having all the budget problems like us over here in good ole Louzianne? What do they get a bigger portion of our oil revenues than we do....just askin??

But lemme tell you one more thing...I ain't never gonna move to Texas and have to pay all them damn property taxes. Just ain't gonna happen; I'll modify my scooter so it can roll on dirt trails befoe I give up my homestead exemption and have to pay property taxes. - Loon Grifoon

"That move (Stelly repeal) may have cost the state more than $600 million this budget year"

I HAVE NO BUYER'S REMORSE AT ALL!!! I am remorseful Stelly passed the "bleepin" thing in the first place. The huge amount of cash it brought in resulted in a spending orgy that we're still paying, but have to cut in other areas to do so. I am remorseful those expnditures were made. So many raises were given then, now we have to cut state workers to maintain them. One I'm thinking of is teachers..... I don't begrudge them their salaries, but I am remorseful it did nothing that resulted in better educated students... All it did was require me to send more toiletpaper, paper towels & tissue to school. Now that's a lot of ash wiping, hand cleaning and crying. And the day anyone starts talking about lowering my Homestead Exemption is the day I become a tea potter and take up a sign and walk! You think you're sick of hearing from the Tea Party, just try raising property taxes or lowering my exemption! - BoFred

Everyone and once again...cast a glaring eye toward Louisiana's own right wing loony tunes talk jock - Moon Griffon. He brought us Bobby Jindal and now denounces him practically on every show. He continues to hiss gutterally over the Stelly tax plan even after he successfully brought it down. Keep on listening and obeying Moon from Monroe and see where this state ends up... and BTW, so long as ole Moon keeps running Bobby in the ground...well maybe and just maybe ...Bobby ain't so bad after all. - Loon Bafoon

Renters are still paying property taxes. They may not see it, but if you are a low-income renter, the impact is all the more greater to the bottom line of monthly rental costs since there is no homestead exemption on duplexes, homes, and apartments. Now if you happen to rent a unit in a public housing community, I am wondering if the taxes are foregone.

Renters are not the majority of the population, and it is not to say that there is a correlation between those that support lowering the exemption because they believe it does not affect them and those would be impacted by it (the renters and owners of property under 75K or near or below the median rates. - Jason D.
"I also noticed that according to this poll, only 29% of responders support increaing property taxes by means of lowering homestead exemption."

-----

You don't suppose those are the same 30% of the populace who rent do you? Nah, I didn't think so.

Don't tax you, don't tax me, just tax that man behind the tree!

And Wally, quit the name calling. Not nice attempting to OUT someone, seriously.

Let's keep the dialogue flowing.

Only comeback I have is much better adjective. Thanks, Mrs. Turk.

I do find your blogs and articles to be written with much less bias than he whose initials are W.P.!

Fact is Louisiana has too many 4 year public universities for taxpayers to effectively support. The problem is not the need to increase taxes. The problem is not the "cutting" of universities. The problem is that the Higher Ed pie is cut into too many pieces.

Reduce the number of public 4 year universities and give the available funds to the remaining schools for them to advance further. - RCajunrunner

The reality is that $80k per year as a HH income does put you in the top 25% of Louisiana Households...
I don't think we are giving those sampled enough credit here - they surely realize that the cuts we are now making and needed due to lowering the tax burden on so many now is forcing cuts to programs they deem vital. K-12 Cuts, University cuts... what will make a business want to locate here if they can't send their kids to decent schools? Who will want to move here? The out migration we are seeing is huge... Jindal is taking us down the wrong road. - Reality Please...

I wonder what portion of that 71% opposed to lowering homestead flock to the polls and vote for every property tax increase because they know they won't be paying for it? - RCajunrunner

"Approved by lawmakers in 2002, the Stelly Plan cut state sales taxes for everyone and increased income taxes only on the wealthiest taxpayers"

Wow. Really, Lafayette "Independent"? I didn't realize $80k was the "wealthiest" of taxpayers. A combined income of 80k could easily be a police officer and a teacher. Boy, that married couple is really living large! - RCajunrunner

Goidel said a lawmaker who sponsors a tax increase at the April 25 session "is (at) high risk. The public is fickle."

That is also in the T-P story. It's certainly true. I will be watching very closely to see how Michot and Cortez vote. And of course, I expect Jindal to veto any tax increases that come across his desk. So long as Jindal sticks to his guns, and cuts some spending, he's golden.
