Government takes care of government employees and retired government employees when the taxpayers in the business community pick up the tab...this has always been the case, it is the nearest thing to democracy, explain that to me. - HARDHAT

"Fairness in taxes" is truly a contradiction. Taxes are by the very definition and nature unfair. Nevertheless, when considering the issue of "fairness" with respect to taxes, income tax exemptions for state retirees should be examined.
Why should the fact that an individual retired from the state or any vestige their of, be granted 100% exemption from paying state income taxes--just for the record the same is true for federal retirees. The fact that an individual worked for the state for "X" number of years is not a valid reason to exempt any individual from paying their "fair"-there's that word again-share of state income taxes. It's time such an exemption be rendered null and void. - RODEOCLOWN

People should look at the transformative effect that sales tax revenues have had on the governing bodies of the Haynesville Shale parishes. With gas barely bumping $4, why in the world would we want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg by increasing the industry's property tax? - DeSoto Parish Official

I agree with Gravolet "The system works a lot better when everyone pays their fair share." Which is why we should take a look at at a property tax structure that allows the Assessor to tax 13 acres (recently purchased at $7 million) that is the location of the "Parc de Lafayette" to have only paid $45 per year in property taxes for the last 20 years. Why you ask, because it has been considered "agricultural lands" and valued at less than $4,500. What's also interesting, now the other lands owned by the Saloom family are no longer identified on the public access map from the Assessors office. Why? Maybe the ind. should ask someone? - Fair Tax fan
