TIF WUZ a good idea, till the head honchos got greedy & thought to help out their friends (maybe even business partners) and now they dun messed it up for everyone else! You shot yourself in the foot! I cannot see calling for a vote for every situation where a TIF would benefit an economically distressed area. It would be stupidly expensive & rarely get anyting accomplsihed. Personally, I believe this TIF fiasco in River Ranch went just as I expect the city/parish council to handle it. I also believe the huge public outcry, which I totally supported, should not have had to take place & Durel & Gothreaux should NEVER have proposed it or defended themselves so vehemently. THAT PROPOSED TIF WAS INCREDIBLY STUPID. I hate to see good TIFs, like the shopping center in North Lafayette, become prohibitive, but I guess its a case of "the good having to pay for the bad". What's that old saying about "absolute power" corrupting absolutely????? - Morrow

The plan is to cause our country to bankrupt and sell to the Chinese, that will benefit China in a reduction of shipping costs, and import taxes, in America. - NORTHSIDIAN SHOTGUN

With apologies to DEVO:

When a problem comes along
you must TIF it
Before the cream sits out too long
you must TIF it
When a good time turns around
you must TIF it
You will never live it down
unless you TIF it
No one gets away
until they TIF it

It's not too late
to TIF it
TIF it good

Holy Goofus: A gentle reminder: The ordinance is simply asking for the council to follow its own Home Rule Charter which states: No new tax without a vote of the people. It cannot and does not outlaw TIFs -- that must and should be done with a change to state law. - Ophelia 46

This proposed "council policy" is stupid.

TIFFs are highly beneficial to a community if used properly...as a means to an end to promote public policy fostering new development or redevelopment in areas of the community that are underdeveloped or no longer economically stable.

The Parc development proposal certainly didn't meet this criteia, but why throw out the baby with the bath water. Its just throwing away a valuable tool for the community.

Dumb, dumb appeasement politics... - The Holy Goofus

TIFs are, or were, a altruistic idea gone bad. An effort by politicians appearing to do something good while making a mess of sales taxes. If left to fester, TIFs make sales tax rules and regulations into a nightmare of compliance. You can have one rate here and across the street another. - James Melancon
