The Master Plan must be a retirement plan for certain individuals in Lafayette Parish, because the actual estimated costs (including contigencies, etc.) are much lower than what the proposed tax rate hike is based on. Go to the School Board website's home page and click on the ABOUT LPSS tab. In the lefthand column is a link to the Master Plan. Click on this link and once on this new page, click on the orange tab titled MASTER PLAN in the lefthand column. Once you are on this page, there are two sections I would like to point out...the 'Financial Summary' link (Section 5) of the Table of Contents and the 'To View The Facility Options For Each Site CLICK HERE' link below the Table of Contents. Why, for example, does the replacement of Lafayette High cost $95 million in the Financial Summary (which is what the tax cost is based on), and it only costs $73 million in the Facilities Options section as a replacement cost. The estimated cost per square foot is clearly spelled out in the Planning Constants section of the Overview, which is section 4 of the Table of Contents. When one does the math, one realizes the numbers more closely match the lower figures represented in the Facilities Options Section. The tax is being proposed on inflated numbers, which no one has ever been able or willing to explain to me when I ran for the District #6 Seat last fall. This tax is only enough to service the debt on $600 million dollars. We will likely be paying on this for 30 years or more, and it is only enough for half of the project. My opponent was under the impression that the tax would pay off the first phase of the project in 5 years, then the tax revenue would be available to finish phase 2. That is not how a bond issue works! In 5 years, the school board will ask for another tax hike to service the debt on the 2nd phase of the project. If we used the real figures in the Facilities Options section, I bet the project is more like a $750 - $800 million project (including all contigencies!), rather than a $1.11 billion project. I'm not opposed to rebuilding schools or raising property taxes to pay for it. I am opposed, as a taxpayer, to getting financially raped. If I am not getting reamed by our esteemed leaders, then explain the discrepancies in the proposal. It would also be nice if I didn't have to look so hard to find this information, since it is in 3 different sections of the Master Plan. That alone is suspect. - Dudley LaBauve, III

You said you were not going to pay your taxes. That's an admission that you will break the law.

And that's Mr. Native to you. - LAFAYETTE NATIVE RESIDING IN CA

Native --

I'm not ducking anything. I was crystal clear in my response to you. I said exactly what I meant. If you have any question about what I said, go back and reread it. - ragin_cajun

Race hate? I have no race hate, I just hate bigots.

Calling your organization 100 black men is racist and sexist.

It suggests both that black men need an exclusive club because they can't get into the circle of white men who run things. It also suggests that women are eligible for either club.

You can't expect racism to fade away while simultaneously endorsing bigotry.

They should just change their name to 100 bigots. - black man

Sorry but I can't take an organization called "100 racist men" seriously.

Listen, fellar, save your race hate for when you and r.c. convene your next white citizen's council meeting.

And remember; keep hate alive!

1, lone white woman: I'm REAL SORRY FOR THE STATE OF THE SCHOOLS, but I'll work against another property tax till the last breath in my body. I'm voting AGAINST the renewals which I've never done in my (getting long now)life. I volunteer @ schools, but IT WILL BE A COLD DAY IN HELL BEFORE I LOSE MY HOUSE CAUSE OF THE PREVIOUS 20 YRS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD & ITS LEADERS NOT CARING TO SPEND $$$ TO KEEP UP SCHOOLS. I attended prayer services @ STM and I've seen what determined parents, dedicated administrators and considerate students can do to maintain a school for many years. I DETEST THE CAVALIER manner in which the SB thinks is can just dump on the public via property taxes. I am disabled & on a fixed income & its been hard enuf to keep the wolves at bay. Until I see WAY more caring by teachers, students & parents & maybe other caring citizens, I'll fight to the last breath against the school board, the parish govt and the sheriff's office every time! I demand more fiscal responsibility before I lose my home. - MaggieB

Yea! We need to look to the Cuban model to make real progress.

Don't use any variation of Lafayette Native, I have a copyright on that name.

Surely a capitalist such as yourself can understand that, huh. - LAFAYETTE NATIVE RESIDING IN CA

You have got to tax people in order to run and have a sucessful government. The federal tax rate should be at 50%. This rate combined with closing all tax loopholes in the tax code, and a halt for 5 years on defense spending with an increase on ssi and medicare witholding for all income above 250K will solve all problems, state, local and federal.

r.c., you would agree with that, huh. - LAFAYETTE NATIVE RESIDING IN CA

100 white men must have a lot of money and not know how to spend it. 100 Black Men make sound points about waiting for a new, long term superintendent as well as developing a system of transparency that supports accountability. As long as there are overpaid dead weight central office rehired retirees like Lawerence Lilly, that is very much a turn off to voters. - Real Deal
