Charter schools have no better track record than public schools, and they are free to cherry pick the best and brightest students. Whatever can be done in a charter school can also be done in a public school (witness the effectiveness of public magnet schools). This is simply the privatization of education. Piyush clearly has some big contributors in the charter education growth industry! - MollyBloom

Layne,

If the guys got talent, his degree shouldn't matter. Ragin is correct. The school system is a failure. Charter schools work. What's the problem? I know, the lackey BESE members who have failed at their job for the past twenty years wouldn't have any control over the charter schools. - Rinkelstein

“The guy really needs to get seasoned to handle such an important job,” Bayard said.

Put some of that Slap Ya Momma Cajun seasoning on him. He'll be okay after that. - yesidoknow

It's just stunning reading these remarks to stop and remember that this public education system that everyone is so viciously defending is a dismal, and expensive, failure. Why SHOULDN'T these guys "gut" the public education system? Everyone agrees it's F'd up and needs to be changed, right?

I thought all you leftists LOVED "change" and "reform". - ragin_cajun

What lap dog Pastorek was doing gradually in terms of charter schools and vouchers, White would do immediately without hesitation. Pastorek bagan the process of gutting the public education system with the approval and pushing of Piyush Jindal. White, if selected, was chosen for RSD because Pastorek knew months ago that he would make this move which is why Jindal expressed little remorse at his departure. He also had every intention of putting White's name out there for superintendent. Jindal doesn't want just a lapdog this time, he wants a pitbull who will tear the system to shreds. White, if selected, would be ruthless in the continued gutting of the Louisiana Public School System. BESE members need to stand up, for once, and buck Piyush Jindal. - The way it is!

The BESE members who oppose the temporary appointment of John White as Superintendent of Education for the state have good reasons for their opposition. Although White spent a few years as deputy chancellor of NYC schools, he holds only a bachelor's degree. It's quite strange that he was hired for the position, considering that he doesn't hold at least a master's degree. He does hold a certification from the Broad Foundation, a training institution for people interested in "the business of education." Education pundit Diane Ravitch referred to White as "a specialist in closing public schools, opening charters" on hearing the news of his appointment to the N.O. position. I guess what he lacks in education and significant years of experience is made up by having the "correct" ideology, from Jindal's point of view. I'm glad to hear some of the BESE members are refusing to drink that Kool-Aid. - Layne St.Julien
