Marcus laments the amount of arable land that we, in a state that boasts a 12-month growing season, simply “give to grass.”

Grass is a real waste of landscaping opportunity!! Good luck, Marcus! But remember: keep those wings clipped or it's gumbo next door!!! - realitycheck

I will "sparkle" my agreement with Marcus, his work and that I have FIRST HAND WITNESS of those front yard chickens in Seattle in small yards, smaller than those in Souvenir Heights (Saints Streets). They do it in a cold, rainy for 8 months solid, forbidding climate. This will work here too. I'm just no fan of the roosters calling all night b/c of the mercury vapor artificial lights everywhere in town. Maybe I'm mistaken or it is primarily hens only being raised in town. Really as PM has noted, citywide ordinances for this kind of thing are outsized and outmoded. These decisions should not be blanketly applied on a city-wide scale, instead these policies should be made on a neighborhood scale by the stakeholders in the neighborhoods. It would do all our neighborhoods good to have formal structures in place for democratic community decision making, which can improve the bonds of civic life here. - Jason D. Faulk

Agreed "PM", You can see chickens in the front lawns of Seattle, bees on the rooftops of NYC, and crops where ever you can fit them in cities across the country. Thanks everybody for reading! - The Urban Naturalist

I wonder what can be done about these outdated neighborhood ordinances from the 70s & 80s that prevent keeping chickens for eggs. - PM

This new sustainability movement is wonderful, and even more special is that in many cases it is being led by young people who seem to understand and want to get back the connection of people to the earth, that was lost by their parents. - Special K

Nice writing Miss Deville. Thank you for helping to spread the word about these excellent local resources. Mr. Descant is a pleasure to deal with. He is very knowledgable and helpful. Thanks for the chicks Marcus! They are looking beautiful. - Joshua

"Chemical companies are brilliant,” “They tell you to apply high nitrogen that stimulates fast growth, which makes [the plants] weak and less disease tolerant.”

It's all a part of the conspiracy. I saw South Park last night which explained what is really going on. You know the episode the doogie in the urinal. - Colon Flow
