Herein lies the central tension of the two–party doctrine. It identifies popular sovereignty with choice, and then limits choice to one party or the other. If there is any truth to Schattschneider's analogy between elections and markets, America's faith in the two–party system begs the following question: Why do voters accept as the ultimate in political freedom a binary option they would surely protest as consumers? ... This is the tyranny of the two–party system, the construct that persuades United States citizens to accept two–party contests as a condition of electoral democracy.

I attended the Kick Off for Candidates and was glad I attended. All three candidates represented themselves very well. I was unaware there was a candidate for Govenor until I attended the event. I was especially moved by Mr. Scott who is running for State Senate in the 24th District. It's to give new energy and ideas the opportunity to lead their communities in State Government - Concerned Northside Citizen

Hey, everyone. I'm a member of Acadiana Progressive and am part of the team of private individuals who put on the Kickoff for Candidates event.

I'm writing (and providing my real name) to put to rest some misconceptions that are popping up here in the comments. While I certainly understand the skepticism that this event was truly privately-funded, I can assure you that we received ZERO dollars from ANY political party, group or other interest. That's what made this event different: it was put on by a relatively loosely-organized group of interested private citizens who wanted to provide a forum for progressive candidates to get their message out to the people, and, perhaps more importantly, allow the PEOPLE to interact with the candidates in a way that isn't often done.

We are extremely proud of the event's turnout and the success we achieved just by getting to work.

If you'd like more information about our group, please visit our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/AcadianaProgressive

Sincerely,

Robert J. Wilson

I was impressed with the wonderful evening this group hosted at their own expense in order to allow candidates to be heard and meet people individually and answer their questions. They opened with live music, an energizing dance by a ballet company,
and then had some great speeches that garnered applause from the audience numerous times. I was able to speak to each candidate presented and ask questions. It was an enjoyable evening. And they also had some great food as well! I would encourage this organization and others to host events such as this, free to the public. Not all candidates have 9.5 million in campaign money for events such as Jindal does. - Amazing

It was a very nice event. I enjoyed hearing Tara Hollis, candidate for governor, list the promises of Gov. Jindal that have not been fulfilled. It is important that someone bring these issues forward. Terry Landry is an outstanding candidate for state rep. in the newly created majority black district which includes parts of Lafayette, St. Martin, and Iberia Parishes. - POLTICAL OBSERVER

This event was great! Acadiana Progressive members were very cordial and friendly. They hosted this event that reminded me of an old time political rally where people weren't disruptive but had something to say. Stump speeches were motivating. This beats the Town Hall format where people shout out questions or have hand picked questions answered by the candidate. I had a chance to talk with each candidate and appreciated the opportunity for personal contact. I hope to see other events like this in the future. - Bosco

I attended the meeting. It was up-beat,inspirational and motivational. Much so that I chose to become a group member. Tara Hollis, candidate for Governor and Terry Landry, candidate for Representative in a new House District #96 were great speakers who one could tell, really spoke from the heart. Kelly Scott, candidate for Senate District 24 is young but demonstrates great promise. - IcedMilk

part of what makes the US the best country in the world is that it takes care of its citizens, that we all matter, that we all have the same opportunities. Part of that process is because we have a 2, or sometimes 3, party system. Just as the 3 branches of govt ensure better govt, more political parties ensure better govt. I'm somewhere in the middle, I hope, cause I have sharecropper ancestors who were able to get themselves out of the fields because of VA programs and, most importantly, a govt provided education! There was a time in the US when books were not provide. I welcome and applaud anyone trying to make sure everyone is represented in politics. I'll never forget the time I heard Barbara Bush say "We only need 51%" cause it meant to me that were the only ones who mattered. We all matter. - Hope
