I agree with the reader who said Fisher got whats coming to her. The paper hung Kenny Mire when he got his DUI but there was no comment when she got hers.People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!! This is typical of those who think they are better than everyone else. "I just got a ticket" come on! - busman

Just a simple comment: I'd like to buy Dr. Stewart for what he's worth and sell him for what he thinks he's worth. Come to think of it, the same could be applied to many politicians in this area, Lafayette. - RODEOCLOWN

I actually know nothing of either party. “A Life Principle” – We should never do or say anything that will hurt another. On its face value this appears to be a rage moment meant to maliciously harm. Would you ever have considered burning down a hospital because some supervisor had you work days without sleep while interning? Or would you ever consider harming those surrounding you if there are any reasons to become upset with their actions? If one prospers unfairly from a business decisions, perhaps an offset would be to volunteer in some manner to assist the needy in our community.

We all make mistakes and poor decisions at one time or another. If you felt unjustly reported about why not take the intellectual highroad and use, shown by your own actions, what appears to be unlimited resource funds at your disposal to rent media space. To then present an intelligent proper rebuttal.

If I were Ms. May I would seek a restraining order, as the conduct is very concerning and appears meant to personally harm and defame. Nothing good will come from these actions. If in fact, whether legal or not, a loophole was abused, then there are many who now will likely seek the other moments in your life that reflect any character defects or perceived wrongful acts.

This was not a better moment. An apology billboard and a personal apology to Ms. May would seem appropriate and would perhaps go a good distance in redeeming yourself as a business man. If you believe you have righted any wrong, I don’t think you accomplished that at all.

There are no solutions in the emotional mindset of anger, hatred, or disgust, there is only anger - hatred and disgust. Surely one can find a better solution to vent or attempt make right a wrong.

The sooner this thread comes to an end, the better! This exchange is not particularly good for our regional or national reputation! It is simply inhumane and beatial to take delight in another's misfortune, no matter how well deserved. The Independent is not run by Murdock. And The Independent (despite its late 18th century name) is not London's notorious Fleet Street muckraking! - Gaius Cilnius Maecenas

Resident, thank you first for your civil and mature response.

You make fair points on a few occasions (some of which I find myself in disagreement, but such is life). In response to a few:

-I do indeed have a problem with TheInd's style of "journalism". TheInd (and its predecessor) have always purported to be the one true bastion of professional journalism in Lafayette (and yes, The Advertiser is...well..."lacking"...). True journalism, however, relies upon fact and truth, and allows the reader to draw its own conclusions. TheInd takes the (ironically) Rush Limbaugh approach -- "here are the facts (as we see them), and here's how you should feel about it". It's fairly insulting to the observant reader who demands a bit more. But to each his/her own, I guess. At any rate, calling TheInd "the best source of investigative journalism in Lafayette" doesn't exactly drip with prestige, given that there are only two options, and the other option is (as we both acknowledge) nothing special. Add to that TheInd's modus operandi of employing selective outrage, and it's not hard to make the case that they're lacking in credibility -- and certainly in objectivity.

-True, an attempt to equate TheInd's reporting on Stewart's antics with Stewart's billboards would not be a fair assessment. However, that's not the point or comparison I was making. I asserted that it was perhaps a bit of karma for TheInd's (and its predecessor's) history of attacking and casting aspersions on often good, upstanding people. (And no, that's not to suggest that I think of Stewart as one of the aforementioned good, upstanding people.)

-I most certainly am the judge of the side of right -- for myself, as I see it, not unlike TheInd appoints itself as judge on such stories as the one in question, and not unlike you yourself do in opining on the story and the commentary here. Implicit in my use of the phrase "on the side of right" is "...in my assessment".

We all see things from differing perspectives, through differing filters, based on a different set of life experiences. In this case, I see a well-known and documented history of (at times) incivility being met with an act of incivility in kind. (And that doesn't make Stewart any less shady, to be sure.) - Karma Police

Geez small towns are so predictable. They are so starved for something to do that this is how they occupy their time? Nothing ever happens here, do we must create some excitement with this mindless crap. If we spent half the time we do gossiping as we did being proactive about progress and change, we'd be a lot further in the growth process. Thus culture of complacency stunts any possibility of growth and I don't mean another store or hotel. Real growth. We live in a town where our mayor was reelected by default b/c no one wanted the job. Scary stuff. - betty black

So, let me get this straight: homeboy begs LCC for money (via a TIF district) and when he doesn't get it, says "FINE. I don't get my money? Now, my hotel will only be FOUR stars!" Then, he pays $6K a month for a silly little vendetta billboard?

Seems to me that he could have used that money to buy the extra star he wanted for his hotel.

I'm glad that the billboard carries the disclaimer "Paid for by Parc Lafayette, LLC" so I know to stay the hell away from the place once it's built.

He's like an angry 12-year-old with money. - Yllets

If I may speak of another despicable billboard: Amb. Caffery & Kaliste Saloom, a billboard teh size of a building touting "intimate rejuvenation surgery" by La Belle Cosmetics - two as a matter of fact. Is that surgical center so desperate for clients the commercials at 9 am are not working anymore??? I find the that billboard particularly offensive since it shows a woman's crotch. What, is there no men's "intimate rejuvenation surgery"??? Its just offensive. I'd rather not look at crotches on billboards while stuck at a traffic light..... - Hope

Karma Police, you cast yourself as an impartial observer above any bias, but it's pretty clear that you have a problem with The Independent. You call it muckraking journalism with nifty little parentheses and suggest that civility is not to be expected from The Independent. In reality I think most people would say that The Independent is the best source of actual investigative journalism in Lafayette, as opposed to the other grammatically-challenged and shallow media outlets that we have.

After appointing yourself judge "on the side of right," you say that the despicable personal attack of Stewart's billboard is "comeuppance." Forgive us if we find your judgment lacking. A simple comparison and contrast, sort of like the one we had to do in fifth grade, shows that The Independent's reporting of exploiting tax loopholes and attempting to use TIF's has nothing to do with personal attacks and everything to do with informing the citizenry. What is Stewart's billboard? A cheap attack on a person with nothing significant in the way of informing people.

Boo hoo, Glenn Stewart, you couldn't use a government TIF to put a few more dollars in your pocket (thanks in part to The Ind), and you were one of many who were exposed as avoiding taxes by paying some hands to cut grass. So you chose to go all 'revenge' with a billboard sized personal attack. But I don't think it will do much good, since appreciating your piece de resistance would take the lowest standard of morality and rationality. - Resident

Looks like karma has reared its ugly head in grand fashion. While I don't support Stewart's antics, I can't help but cheer the Karma Police on as they take their pound of flesh.

Ms. May's publications (TheInd currently, and the Times of Acadiana in its previous incarnation) made lots of hay via a muckraking style of "journalism" (word used loosely). These publications have often (in a very public and humiliating way) cast aspersions on genuinely good people.

Of course, they've done so while hiding behind that BS veil of "public right to know" -- usually in the name of "creating controversy" (the better to attract readers which, in turn, creates more lucrative advertising media out of those freebie papers, see?).

Ms. May has never wronged me personally; nor has Dr. Stewart endeared himself to me, so I have no proverbial dog in this fight, other than simply "standing on the side of right". And in this instance, neither are right -- it just so happens that Ms. May is now getting her long overdue comeuppance.

May the gods have mercy on Dr. Stewart (who, interestingly enough, appears to have broken no laws in his "exploitation of loopholes"...but who nonetheless comes off as being slimy).

And note to jazzpop: I don't think public discourse is dead, but I do think civility is MIA. Then again, I temper my expectations of civility in discourse when publications such as TheInd are involved, as incivility begets incivility. - Karma Police
