I am neither supporting nor condoning the behavior of Mr. Stewart in regards to the bill board. The story you printed about him may have some merit, but it is how and why the story was printed that I question. I am merely stating an opinion, which is what the Independent does weekly, and tries to pass it off as “investigative journalism”…this is just one example.
When your alleged “newspaper” will go to the extent of printing the most visually unflattering pictures of your subjects, (or our elected officials) and refer to them as “Dumb and Dumber”, or “Couillon of the week”, in an obvious attempt to embarrass and discredit them, then you have left the world of “investigative journalism” and joined the ranks of the “National Enquirer”. Your weekly “rag” regularly ridicules anybody and everybody that does not conform to your liberal, left leaning ideologies. If you merely pointed out what you consider their transgressions in a mature forum, then you may have some credibility.
So when somebody does the old “turnabout is fair play” routine on you, you call it the “black heart of revenge”….seriously??
The reservoir of your “pen” is filled with the ink of malice and meanness for all who oppose your views, except when it comes to explaining away Ms. May’s conundrum. “Cherry Fisher May was sober…” This is obviously when “investigative journalism” meets “creative writing”…
Maybe this would be a good time for some inner reflection.
And when Cherry Fisher May does not make your “Couillon of the Week” for her actions, then you need to examine your standards… and "raise the bar" a little higher.

If I may use classical learning, Aramaic and Greek, to close this sad non-event, I appeal to the Aramaic Babylonian Talmud Baba Batra: 9b, "One who gives charity in secret is greater than Moses." Furthermore, I quote three learned Greek terms from the Fifth Century Neo-Platonic philosopher, Proclus [411-485 CE], the scholarch at the pagan School of Athens: philopolis [Greek, "caring for one's city"], aischrokerdes [Greek, "sordid greed for gain"], and (this is for Walter) philosophoi parrhesiai [Greek, "philosophical freedom of speech"]!

This publication and the May family are noted for numerous, public & private, eleemosynary and philanthropic acts in this community of Lafayette! Furthermore, they, and especially, Cherry Fisher May, have demonstrated by their respective labors that "they care for this city" [philopolis]!

In addition, Dr. Stewart has amply demonstrated that his primary motivation in life is wealth enhancement by "sordid greed for gain"! This is the sickness of our evil age we all live in! This violation of the inherent property of righteousness [Egyptian, ma'at; Hebrew, sedeq] is captured well by the single Greek academic term, aischrokerdes ["sordid (dirty) greed for gain"]!

Lastly, Walter's admirable vigilance of investigative reporting satisfies the philosophical standard of freedom of speech! The purpose of a vigilant press is not London Fleet Street muckraking [How newspapers are sold quickly and profitably!], but rather the protection of the Common Good from those with nefarious intent or thieving business interests.

The readership of this posting knows well which camp each of these two parties have erected their tents within: open right behavior or furtive nasty behavior! - Gaius Cilnius Maecenas

I am visiting Lafayette and happened upon the article "Black Heart of Revenge". I was horrified that someone (Glenn Stewart) would go to such extremes against another individual. I'll be praying for you because I know your fate. - T Billeaudeau

Dear Mr. Pierce and Ms. May,

Thank you for what you are doing. I am of an age to remember the good work that Richard Baudouin did for us with the Times. You grace his legacy, - CitizenOfLafayette

Everyone involved in this pathetic little drama should be ashamed of themselves! First there is The Independent, which over the years has become less and less "independent" and more of a blatently left leaning paper. Do I believe that the owners and/or editor of The Independent may have overlooked some of the property owned by their cronies or failed to report on some of the indiscretions of some of the members of their little social circle? ABSOLUTELY!!! Do I believe that your reporting on this story has been somewhat biased...YES!

Then we have Dr. Glen Stewart who has been a complete jerk about this entire fiasco! Dr. Stewart, you seem like a smart man, so I cannot fathom why you would choose to be so completely disrespectful, condescending, and rude to the very people who will be frequenting the stores in your complex. You are like a spoiled child throwing a temper tantrum because you didn't get your way. I will refrain from commenting on whether the TIF was a good idea or not since neither side gave us a chance to have a fair and reasonable debate on the issue. But Dr. Stewart, you had officials trying to help you and I'm sure your childish behavior has given them many regrets about getting involved in this development. And the bulletin boards are just spiteful and mean spirited.

ALL parties involved should be ashamed of their behavior! - Knowledge is Power

I'm not sure as a buisiness owner i would apprecicate my hard earned money that i pay in rent going toward a billboard campaign against anyone. Have personal views of your own, pay for it out of your own pocket..... A landlord that is willing to use development money this way seems like a lose cannon. Commercial rent is high in this town, one would think he would want to open his development on a high note, not in scandal. Would you want to rent from this guy. What if you upset him, wonder what he would do?....ps i wonder if he will take the tax deduction for advertising his development with this silly billboard?....i'm guessing yes.... - landlord....

All of the back and forth is residual...the origin of the problem was Ms. Miller's attempt to bash this (and whatever other) developments. This piece of land as been a waste of weeds, trees, hay, and rampant teens for year...after housing cows for many years. It has been a wasted and less than beautiful element on one of our main thoroughfairs...why put down someone trying to make improvements, to add jobs, and to add value to our city? The problem is the laws and the elected officials who don't fix the loopholes. It was unnecessary to call names when they were doing what was protocol at the time of registering. Not submitting to a breathalizer test, no matter who told you not to, is not exactly being an upstanding citizen. The saying is "don't drink and drive", not drink a moderate amount, admit to it, and think it should all be ok. That was just poor judgement on Mrs. May's part.

I'm disappointed that the Independent has chosen to be ugly to individuals and to celebrate those commenting on a citizen in a negative manner instead of presenting the basics. We don't need a soap opera caliber of reporting, you guys are better than that. - growlaf

Walter Pierce, Cherry Fisher-May, Heather Mills and the entire staff of THE INDEPENDENT deserve commendations and compliments on investigative reporting of this nature. My one and only question is why such investigative work is not being performed by other, i.e, KATC, KLFY, THE DAILY ADVERTISER, etc., "news organizations/professionals" in the Acadiana market?

Could the reason be perhaps the subject matters in question may be to controversial, or, perhaps, other news organizations do not know where to look or perhaps know what questions to ask, or, perhaps, other news organizations simply--and this is probably more true to form--simply don't want to expend the effort critical or otherwise necessary toward evaluation of the subject matter in question.

At any rate, THE INDEPENDENT deserves "cu does" and not criticism. Keep up the good work. For the first time in a very/very long time, Lafayette has a real newspaper and not a daily rag that doubles as kitty litter.

As a lifelong citizen of Lafayette, I have always wondered why bits of farm land remained undeveloped, and I took the original article on the tax loophole as an educational article, not as a radical article calling for a witch hunt. Then again I don't practice witchcraft.

Ms. Miller may be shrill and piercing, but she is passionate, educated and thorough. She may also have directed her journalist investigations to areas that had caused her issues in her life, but how else does one discover issues? Are they hand delivered?

Buzz driving is drunk driving, but I dare say Ms. May has a court date and the court will decide.

If you take issue with judicial decisions or tax loopholes, don't blame the people, blame the officials. Start the change you want to see in the world. Write your representatives and VOTE wisely.

Even young radical journalists have their place and fit a societal need. It's about time some one caused excitement for the other side.

Catfish it up Ms. Miller. Take each naysayer as compliments of the tea house and as a pat on the back for a job well done. - JDough

I was told that City Hall had an in house producer of a raw nature and that every Thursday on boys night out at the City Club one could hear the Parish Administrators all agiggle hysterically like little fifth graders. Hummmm, could they have been previewing a head count...
I think a parish-wide caption contest should be promoted by Joey. He is the Guard on duty. Hell, he probably does not use the urinal, he drives to the City Club urinal. Can you imagine a circle jerk round table of SIR Joey and the Couillion circle jerkers. GA ! - NORTHSIDIAN SHOTGUN
