Amen Jane...... This Boffy lady has no stance on anything. She was bought and paid for by Jindal. She brokered a deal with Jindal supporters. In exchange for them financing her campaign she will vote for Chas Roemer as BESE president and John White for LA Superintendent of Education. So if you would like a State full of Charter schools that are run by suspected terrorists groups and every education decision made by a man NEVER ever ran a school, then vote for Boffy. Bayard has my vote even if he is the lesser of two evils. He actually has the experience and history for this job. Ms. Boffy has no clue what kind of devil she sold her soul to and the two votes she has promised will not be the last thing that devil asks for. If she refuses he WILL throw her under the bus. - Mason Guillory

I would love to know what her stance is on special education issues. Especially students with disabilities having access to the general curriculum. I am so sick of hearing about stuff like tenure. If I don't do my job and my evaluations lack I get fired. There are many teachers who need to go but are protected by some crazy idea that the last in is the first out.

I also would like to know her views on the characterization of Louisiana. Wonder if she has a clue about the several of the groups being given tax payer dollars to teach our kids and using it to support over 500 visas to bring teacher from other countries and the almost 1/2 million one charter group spent on janitorial services for two schools. OR if she has a clue about ties that charter groups have to something called the Hezmit movement which is tied to Teach for America that happens to be where 90% of the young new department of education staff and RSD staff have come from. When she comes forward with a plan to stop the influx of Gulen sympathizers she has my vote. If you question these claims just google it. The Times picayune had an art icicle and a website called Charter School Scandals has some interesting information also - Jane broussard

What are Boffy's stance on universal access to Pre-K and Language Immersion? I have nieces moving in from another parish and sadly they will miss out on both lifelong enhancing opportunities. We're still unequal in a number of ways, and it is sad that the opportunity to be immersed in a language is merely like playing the lotto at this point. Lafayette Parish is rich enough, all our youth should be able to enroll in immersion if they want to. Let's pay for this Lafayette.

As for tenure, what protections against retribution, political actions and other machinations would Boffy offer? Being against tenure in a blanket fashion seems an overly simplistic position to take on a complex concern such as this. - Jason D. Faulk

Let us not forget the four professionals that presumably advance the social-economic community: teachers, lawyers, medical doctors (animal & human), and clergy! All four contrive support from the public purse.

The vulgar untruth in this debate is pretending that a professional ought to operate as a ruthless business enterprise. This stupidity has been nourished by the "willful blindness" of criminal business enterprises devalorizing our higher institutions by withdrawing tax funds, so they can be diverted to its furtive, crony, capaitalistic criminal enterprises that reward incompetent politicians or a blackguard "statesman." There should be a healthy antagonism between business (employment) & government (taxes). When government pretends it is acting as an effective, efficient business, it is neither business nor government! This simple vulgarity results in our present plight: chaos & confusion!

The majority of sentiments expressed here are woefully inattentive to the historical record of the last 40 centuries---Why we have professional contracts in our legal and medical professions, and teachers (public education) and clergy (military) in our governmental information systems! - Gaius Cilnius Maecenas

Paul Breaux Middle "picks students” and has "14-1" ratio, is false on so many levels. Boffy did not teach in a bubble, driving to Paul Breaux you would understand this is a Title I school with a very diverse student population. By the way, where do we get the idea that just because a student qualifies for gifted services he/she is any easier to teach? A gifted child does not mean the teacher does not face challenges. It is truly irrelevant what population Boffy has taught. And before any stones are thrown at me, no I do not teach gifted, I am a regular education teacher.
Furthermore, it disturbs me when people discredit another teacher for teaching gifted students. With that said, I am starting my 5th year teaching after working in the oil industry for several years. Tenure is not necessary in this profession, nor does it belong in any profession. I am effective as a teacher, therefore, I am not concerned with losing my job. Fact of the matter is, Louisiana is at the bottom of the list in the nation when it comes to education and this state must make serious changes.
On another note, I assure you, teacher tenure does not top Boffy's list of everything wrong in public education. I teach middle school students that read on an elementary school level not to buy into the propaganda they read in the media, I encourage adults to do the same. What was published is not the whole story of the interview, but the media has the right to pull out the bits and pieces that get people talking. Like any other profession, if you do not perform to a certain standard you are considered ineffective, there is a due process. I personally want the same for education, to be effective and help produce productive citizens. Do not sum up Boffy's efforts with this one article.

I personally don't know Ms Boffy or Mr. McGoffin, but I have witnessed classroom teachers becoming a policymaker and FAIL! Why? (i.e. see looking glass self). If teacher tenure tops Ms Boffy's list with everything that is wrong in public education, then I don't think our future looks as bright as some contend....I hope I'm wrong. - queenbee

Oh, I'm sorry. It's not creationism, it's another viewpoint to evolution called intelligent design. You are obviously a stickler for semantics. Creationism, intelligent design, potato, po-ta-to, it's the same thing. But lets have it your way, kinda like Burger King, any teacher who refuses to teach intelligent design can be summarily dismissed without tenure. There's some veracity for ya.

But this I will say and I have always said: raise the stakes to become a teacher. Set the standards higher to be highered and then higher still to achieve tenure. We will then have a large contingent of teachers to want to teach because they truly enjoy it and believe in what they do. And, they are so good they cannot be summarily dismissed for any contrived reason. - What we should know.

>any teacher who refuses to teach creationism, which is the law in Louisiana,

You clearly do not know the law. Please show us where in the LSEA it requires that (see http://www.legis.state.la.us/lss/lss.asp?doc=631000). In fact, the law expressly prohibits the teaching of creationism. This ignorance on your part makes readers doubt the veracity of anything you write.

Eliminating teacher tenure and replacing it with long-term contracts and sufficient evaluation would improve the quality of education; see http://jeffsadow.blogspot.com/2011/04/roemer-makes-right-call-on-suggesting.html. - Jeffrey Sadow

Job security, in any profession, should be determined by performance and not years on the job. I served on a government board that had tenured employees and I was AMAZED at the effort and time it took to remove an obviously " unacceptable "employee". As much as we talk about education reform we never do anything about it. Personally, I think tenure has to go in all government jobs. There is more abuse with it than there would be without it...times have changed and it is time for tenure to end and Louisiana to move forward. I was a certified teacher in the public school system and would rather been evaluated on my skills than my years on the job. - evaluateme

Do any of you know why we have tenure in the first place? It was to avert the political nonsense of favoritism and political machinations by school boards and religious groups in the community! Despite popular mythology, a tenured teacher can be dismissed at any time for inappropriate conduct, inability to manage children and incompetence in subject matter! Those of you who want tenure eliminated, should think carefully about the results. This is a sure method to guarantee fools are in the profession alone! In my young manhood, I was a professionally trained teacher, and taught in many different sorts of school systems! - Gaius Cilnius Maecenas

Boffy taught at a school with an average class size of 14 students. Students will usually do well when class sizes are that small. My class sizes average 30-33 per class and unlike Paul Breaux Middle our school is required to take everyone. Teacher of the year indeed.

For the record: Tenure guarantees no one a job. A teacher can be fired for a number of reasons. Tenure is in place to protect teachers from arbitrary or vindictive actions of an administrator. Are there teachers that need to go? You bet!! Will getting rid of tenure do that? NO! Start holding administrators responsible for giving bad teachers great evaluations because they are friends or successful coaches. That will fix the problem. - Reinhardt

Touched a few nerves there, did I, Gary? What? Has your facade as community leader and pompous subjective pseudo perveyor of judgement on officials and policies been rendered a tad bit transparent? Your constant entreaties for my identity and that you are parried for sidestepping and not addressing obvious truths concerning Boffy and yourself, show you to be that which I have previously so accurately described you. Your armor had now fallen off and you can be seen for what you are. You have blinked. More than once. - What we should know

I have to agree that tenure should be dismissed. As a parent of a student who had mulitple problems with a teacher(and i'm not the only parent that problems with her), she is still teaching after cussing at my child, yelling at another parent(in front of her boss the principle). What does it take to get a teacher that is obviously there to only collect a check fired? - Southsider

McGoffin, with regard to me: you know what you should know. By the way, you were at a disadvantage the moment you began your you are smarter and know more about this than everyone else diatribe. Your shallowness knows great depths. Again, why don't you run for public office since you are so well versed and community concerned? No! You'd rather sit on the sidelines and pass judgement on those who have the courage to run. Then, from your sideline seat, you pass your judgements on those elected who do or do not follow your philosophies. An example of sham and afraid to run. You are a sad sideline sitting barrister indeed. And yet, the public is taken in by your so-called "community involvement." Gary, you eat that up. - What we should know
