So Jim Brown a "politician" is guilty of plagiarism, wow BIG SURPRISE! On the other end of the spectrum, theIND makes this a front page story, and it is not written by any of their writers. Okay, I know you guys had permission to publish it, but that move has the same "LAZY" characteristics as Jim Brown. At least he is a politician turned "journalist". - beheard

Love The Independent, but have to disagree with your coverage of this so-called "news". I always thought people who plagiarize failed to cite the original source. In Jim Brown's case, he pointed you to the writer and publication where it appeared. So maybe he was a little lazy in attributing every single line. Gambit didn't even run this as a cover story and it's their story. So The Independent lifts it from Gambit and blows it up to a cover story? Maybe your cover should have clearly said, "Reprinted from Gambit." - Rouge Reader

On too frequent occasions the Independent tries to turn trivial matters into news. This is one of those cases. This is all that you can come up with for your lead news? Pretty weak in my view. - Gene Broussard

Ultimtately, plagiarism does need to be intentional -- it can be accidental.

Regardless, what Brown allegedly did would be enough to get a college student expelled (that means thrown out for good). - Narco

Don't forget "The Independent"'s own analysis of a local alleged plagiarist a few years ago; see Reese Fuller's old articles to see what I mean. (Maybe Fuller was at the Times of Acadiana at the time, but I'm pretty sure he was with the Independent.) - Farron

Jim Brown? Is this really a big story item? It might be juicy to The Ind but it is not that meaty. Hope you have something better next week. - James Melancon

Should we be surprised that some life-long politicians are too lazy to be creative, or, apparently to aspire to the ethics of reputable journalists? - TomDerveloyJr
