Couillion --

I think that several commenters before me have satisfactorily proven that property taxes have gone up pretty consistently over the last 5 years or so. Durel, based on his own words, not only thinks that's a good thing but would like to see more tax dollars flowing into LCG coffers so he'll have more money "to do things". Can we all agree on these simple facts of the matter, or would you like me to dig up quotes from theIND to prove it.

As for the TIF districts...you're telling a half-truth. You are leaving out a KEY piece of information, so please read this carefully. If a TIF district actually has residents, called "qualified electors" in the statute, then yes, there must be a vote. BUT, if the TIF district is drawn in such a way that it has no residents in its bounds, then an election is not required.

That is why when Durel and his minions cook up these TIF proposals in Lafayette, they are very careful to draw the boundaries so that they don't contain any residents to vote against them. Durel knows, from bitter experience, that Lafayette voters don't want any tax increases. The Council has lost it's taste for them, too because the local TEA Party runs radio spots everytime they come up for Council vote. Then there's that inconvenient little line in the charter.

So, they have, in Lafayette, created TIF's w/o voter approval. It's been done elsewhere in Louisiana, too. There has, so far, been no legal challenge so la courts haven't yet spoken. - ragin_cajun

RCajunrunner: "Of course, Mayor Durel and the council can't increase taxes without a vote of the people UNLESS they try to push through TIF districts."
Of course you realize that the TIF districts are voted on by the property owners and require a majority vote to be passed. So not one TIF has ever been passed unless the property owners want to tax themselves or their businesses or the businesses in their development. NO one HAS to pay extra taxes if they don't choose to. Emphasize CHOOSE to. - Coullion

Frigin Cajin: How about the reassessment of property values that occured during the housing bust that increased property values, therby increasing property taxes for one.

Ragin, I could be wrong but isn't that the Tax Assessor's office not raising the property tax not a function of the LCG council or administration? - Coullion

"My taxes have not gone up in several years, can you point out what taxes the council or Durel has raised."

Of course, Mayor Durel and the council can't increase taxes without a vote of the people UNLESS they try to push through TIF districts.

Oh...what has Mayor Durel done? That's right, pushed for several TIF districts, continued to do so even after the people fought back on a previous one.

Mayor Durel also has lobbied pretty hard for bills in the state legislature that would have given the authority to levy property and sales taxes to an unelected board of political appointees.

Mayor Durel also pushed extremely hard to convince voters to approve 3 separate tax increases in 2006. He got his rear handed to him on all 3.

So has Mayor Durel, or the council, raised taxes in Lafayette Parish? Maybe not, but not because they didn't try. Mayor Durel and Don Bertrand have tried extremely hard on numerous occasions to support tax increasing initiatives. - RCajunrunner

Extensions for fed income taxes is until Aug 31, 2011, I believe. If I had a dollar for every person I know who has utilized that option, I'd be in a pretty good place. I know people who do this routinely, regularly, every year, just to hold onto the bucks as long as they can. - Morrow

It is possible to "roll back" increases in property taxes when they go up every year and this council has chosen to never do that. They want more money every year. I'm sorry if employees can't get a raise, but I HAVEN'T HAD A RAISE IN 7, COUNT THEM SEVEN, YEARS, but have suffered increased property taxes (and insurance rate increases) every year. I have had to manage that. Any increases may be the one that sends me over the edge. I was raised in an era where a man would have 3 jobs before his house was taken. I am trying desperately not to cross over into the "forclosure" line, so I'll appreciate one year knowing the council will try to live within their means. Of course, my theory is that they'll get reelected & then double up on the raises to catch up.

Oh, AND THOSE TWO COUNCILMEN WHO TOOK THEIR MAX RAISES, CAN THEY TAKE ONE ANYWAY NO ONE ELSE GETS ONE??? - Morrow

frigin: property taxes have gone up. Bar owners are getting a disguised tax in police fees. Under land deals, you should consider all the theft of private property that Durel was going to be able to pull off under HB531 but got stopped.
Unlike eminent domain abuse across the country usually visited on minorities, he could have stolen large tracts of "farm" land, could have given away small properties, would have controlled adjudicated properties dispositions, etc.

There must be an opponent against Durel in this next election!! - spades

Yes a lean budget with no raises for city-parish employees and a coming 6% increase in the amount employees pay for group insurance. Insurance rates were raised considerably last year and will go up once again this year. Durel has no problem taxing employees as well. - RaginCajun77

Ragin, that means the budget hasn't been nearly as big as we have always thought, just accounting functions, thanks for expelling. I know of the horse farm, but can you point out some of the other land deals you mention? Or, maybe you are just a lying psychopath that sits at home looking for reasons to be angry. My taxes have not gone up in several years, can you point out what taxes the council or Durel has raised. No comment right? Go ahead and show your stupidity. - Frigin Cajin

I just want to remind everybody that Durel is NOT fiscally conservative, and he is NOT responsible with money.

Durel has spent a lot of money on arts and speculative land deals he would call "parks", he has said repeatedly that his biggest problem is not enough money to do things with, and he has tried OFTEN to raise taxes in several different ways--both with and without voter approval.

Much of this "leaner budget" is due to "accounting changes" according to CFO Lorrie Toups.

I am always happy to see any government cut its budget, but PLEASE....let's not try to cast Durel as a frugal budgeteer. It's insulting to those of us who have followed LCG politics for the last year or two. - ragin_cajun

All the liberal Republicans:

Durel
Bertrand
Patin
Dore'

Will support it and claim they are "Cut the Budget Conservatives" because it's ELECTION TIME. Nothing of a surprise, if reelected, it will be business as usual.

Patin's Reelect FB page says he is for smaller government, but has voted for higher taxes, higher utility rates, increased growth of government, etc. His push cards DO NOT mention his voting record, how convient! Tell me I'm wrong Cadillac.

I can't wait to see liberal Don Bertrand's conservative platform.

And according the the Secretary of States website, neither Patin or Bertrand have filed their 2010 State or Federal income taxes. - Compassionate One
