It is not mentioned here, but in a local daily paper the Sheriff boasts receipt of the “Triple Crown Award” as a proud accomplishment. Seriously? Weren’t you sued earlier this year because documents that were used to get accreditation were forged by your staff. - John Q. Public

Right on. The good ole’ boy system lives on. Who you are determines what you can get away with. What about the boys that put that police cruiser in the pond? Why weren’t they arrested and charged criminally? After all you are the Sheriff. There was also that other guy who was terminated this year for sexually harassing staff. As it turns out the Sheriff’s Department had already been sued due to him sexually harassing staff. He must have been part of the protected administrators. I don’t see the same professionalism “Good Grief” mentioned above. I am sure that there are some good staff at the Sheriff’s Office that work hard and try to do a good job, but there certainly seems to be just as many bad ones. It is time for a change in leadership. - Big John

In case you haven't noticed the good ole' boy system is alive and well under the Neustrom administration. Neustrom inherited a fine running office from Sheriff Breaux and established his good ole' boy administrative staff. Sheriff Neustrom In 2003 after being in office just three years Sheriff Neustrom terminated approximately thirty employees at one time to further establish his good ole’ boy protected class of employees. One of those individuals was terminally ill with cancer at the time. And what does this administration have to offer to the public? Nothing. The administration is not accessible to the public. If you even want to see the Sheriff you better catch him attending church. That is the only time you will even catch a glimpse of the man. You are not going to see him fielding question from the public or talking to the media about the efforts of his agency. For sometime I thought Craig Stansbury was our Sheriff. Oh and if you don’t want to bother him in church it is completely understandable, but don’t think you can follow him back to the office and slip in to meet with him. He will be long gone before you even get through the red tape of scheduling a meeting. - Daniel Dennett

Oh geez.. Would someone please run against this guy? He is supposed to be the chief law enforcement officer of the parish, but the only crime statitics he reports are those for the "unincoporated areas" of the parish. His patrol zones only cover the unicorporated areas. Why is that? Have the crime rates for the parish as whole risen and you don't want people to know? As Sheriff you should be providing services throughout the entire parish. You should be assisting the smaller community police forces that have limited resources and be reporting the statsitics of the parish as a whole, not just the stats of the unincorporated areas. Those areas shrink everyday. Maybe that is why the numbers keep dropping, because the area you are reporting about keeps shrinking. - Robert Broussard 37

It goes like this: If Chief Craft's guys arrest the drug dealers and regular mischief makers, the Sheriff says the jail is full. The Chief has to pretend that trouble makers are "poor" or "indigent" and in the area just seeking "social services". The problem is created by the Sheriff not taking in arrested persons but the real heat is on the Chief bc it's occuring in his jurisidiction. The jail is supposed to be for our own criminals to protect us; not for imported criminals the state should be housing. Meanwhile, the sheriff is real supportive of the "services". The LPD is forced to use "soft policing" tactics as an excuse for not arresting. The vicious cycle continues and we have free roaming criminals in our community. Patrolling of Precinct 1 was made completely nonexistant by making it too big and using patrol cars for a lot of the pedestrian crime is also ineffective. - realitycheck

Most of the old guard left over by Breaux was what Neustrom had to clean house of. Breaux was a slick good 'ol boy retired state trooper who made sure he muddied the water for Armbruster. Breaux just didn't get caught at the malarky he pulled along with pulling the wool over the eyes of many voters. - Good grief.

NS Shotgun, glad you said that. It has occurred to me that most drug arrests I see are made by Broussard PD, Scott PD and Carencro PD, and even those are too few & far between for me because I hear there's a lot of drug dealing going on. Now I know its cause of the signs...

Neustrom inheirted a smooth no nosense, clicking on all eight operating. The sheriff's office was tops in the state thanks in part to Don Breaux, hell when the criminals salute the sheriff the combination is correctly set together.
Drugs are rampant , but thats okay the drug dealers are congregated off moss in Maks Addition, Truman, and The Block , but Neustrom jurisdiction does not extend north of Jefferson Street, east of Pinhook and I-49, west of University and South of UL, This "is a Drug Free Zone.. - NORTHSIDIAN SHOTGUN

his deputies conducted themselves as professionals before he went in. glad if he runs a tight ship, but there is always room for continued improvement in any organization. he came into a pretty good organization when Sheriff Breaux retired. - BoFred

We now have an honest, hard working, decent, family man as sherfiff who is not a part of old school good 'ol boy system and some of you are still not satisfied. He got rid of the do nothing old guard, has his deputies conduct themselves as professionals who serve & protect while running a tight ship and his deputies treat all members of the public with respect while doing their job. They most certainly do not come across with the jack booted thug mentality toward the public displayed by our Lafayette City Police. If the Chief of Police of Lafayette City were an elected position, Jim Craft wouldn't be chief very long. The fact the Neustrom will have not opposition speaks to his leadership, his community backing, and his leadership. - Good grief.

Too "Progressive". Some criminals need to serve time; we don't need to serve them bc somehow they've had a hard life or something. He rents out the local jail for profit and refuses to take in our own criminals. The Jail was never intended for state use nor for profit. Pretending that social agencies are "helping" our free roaming criminals downtown sets up dangerous situations downtown that ends up being the LPD's problem, with no relief. - realitycheck

I'd like to see the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Dept take a harder stand on illegal drugs - much harder. On the street, the S/O has a very dismal reputation for their enforcement of laws against drug dealers. I'd also like to see a special detectives unit dedicated to solving and prosecuting IDENTITY THEFT. - BoFred
