independentmind: You don't know this area. Sheriff's answer to crime in District 3 is to say that everyone just a addict and should be goin to AA and drug court instead of Hotel Hilton. He don't care. He sticks it to the police. Crime don't go down, it just don't get reported by the police cuz no use to arrest, sheriff won't take em in. Sheriff is the problem and he needs brandon to keep telling the folks that its ok and to look the other way and must be chef craft's fault. - spades

To the "Play-to-Play" crowed above:
Thanks for your contribution to the systematic problem that is sinking our country into bankruptcy so you can get contracts from government or broker power for money. You are the problem. You should be proud of your contribution to your community i.e. your contribution to corruption.

Ms. Turk's critique of Neustrom for making and defending a relatively modest campaign contribution to a voter-elected and then-unopposed candidate is way out of proportion. Mr. Neustrom has a history of not taking sides in political campaigns, as well as an excellent record as a modern, professional, effective and modest sheriff. His department has made significant, nationally recognized, contributions to the community -- many of which go unrecognized among the voters because he happily shares credit with the fine staff he has assembled. Those who approach him with problems receive respectful and helpful attention. He is not a 'glad-hander' or a self-promoter, but isn't that a breath of fresh air? -- especially when he and his department are so successful in reducing crime and protecting the community. His record (and his character) clearly warrant respect and he deserves re-election. - independentminded

The title of this article , " A QUESTION OF CHARACTER " Hmmmm, Ms. Turk you need to rethink about how you titled your article. A Tree with a gnarled twisted trunk may be defined as having character. An oddball imbalanced street man dressed in tails and polished spats may be defined as having character, but, neustrom, shaky shelvin, joey dunuttin, and the greenambulance man having character, naw, they may be character's of the lowest form of humanity, but Madam Turk , Naw, they do not possess character of any stature, they are not possessors, " OF CHARACTER ", not in this real world.
Monsieur Addison, you may order a criminal justice phd degree from sears and roebuck, as chistie william, and or you may purchase a CAN OF STICKUM from bells sporting goods store, the stickum will prevent you from losing any george washington's slid under the table. But do not lower your self to that level, it is an overcrowded occupation in lafayette parish. Actually it is an overcrowded occupation in the entire state, and " THIS IS WHY THE GIFTED, and EDUCATED YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN LEAVE THE STATE...IRONICALLY ONLY THE CHILDREN OF THE DEEPLY SEATED POLITICO'S HAVE THE MEANS AND STATE FINANCED, (WITH YOUR TAX DOLLARS) EDUCATION TO LEAVE THIS NO. 1 RATED MOST CORRUPTED STATE IN THE UNION, and the most corrupted parish or county in the United States, Lafayette Parish Eh ?
My guess is there is a property scam ongoing thru the parish and a bottom dollar offer from the scammers, and the parish administration, the private developers, their cronys and the goons are joined in this under-handed endeavor, now you may say this man may have something with this info. and believe me you would be smart top hide and watch. - NORTHSIDIAN SHOTGUN

Neustrom lost this huge family votes. We live in the district, Neustrom should move out of his gilded cage and come live here and then lets see how much of the money we donated to his campaign fund he will siphon out to Shaky Shelvin, .What a disgrace Neustrom supporting that which he was elected to curb and eradicate, what clay balls to publically support a known criminal such as shelvin, the bottom of the ocean whale offal. Sheriff Harson and Chief Listi, the end of the lawmen in lafayette parish...
" How sad that no one will ever mention neustrom, craft, and harson, in the same sentence with these two former lawmen, HARSON AND LISTI.. - NORTHSIDIAN SHOTGUN

Mr. Rochon: Please get up to speed! The Sheriff has been a "supporter" of AOC, pretending that thugs downtown are actually obtaining "services" and therefore do not need to be incarcerated. (he prefers higher paying prisoners, never mind where they come from) Gachassin, a developer, has "partnered" with AOC to build a project downtown. He seems to have a tight nit family of like minded campaign supporters! (convenient) All of these people need Shelvin to tell his folks that it's all good for them and to trust him. Meanwhile, the City has filed plans to "redevelop" their neighborhoods...... beware..... - historyonyx

I have met Mr. Shelvin twice and would not vote for nor against him. I am pulling for him because of the constant harassment he receives from this "newspaper". You offer nothing new and continually rerun the same article in hopes of swaying the election. Shelvin wins in a landslide. People, not papers, vote. - Tired of it

Let's not have an election. The Independent, and their staff, knows what's best for all voters. We should just believe them. Everyone else is the community needs to shut up and stop participating in the politcal process. Certainly The Independent is above all of us and none of their staff or owners have ever done anything wrong and they are of the highest ethical and moral regard. Their standard his higher than all of us and they should be listened to. Whatever they declare is good for the people, is best way. - FatherKnowsBest

This is a pathetic list of hard-core, liberal leaning Democrats, Joey Durel haters, and white-Republicans who do dirty business with Shelvin. Shelvin has no character. He doesn't return phone calls. He occasionally plays the race card or the Northside-Southside-socio-enconimic card. He's black when he wants to be black and he's white when it helps his wallet. I wonder where his minister is living now that his house has been seized? Time to empty the chamber pot. A vote for Shelvin will speak volumes about the voters of District 3. You get what you deserve. - blackchamberpot

The Independent must envy Mr. Shelvin. People run into financial troubles from time to time but it doesn’t mean week after week your paper should continue to drag their name through the mud. The Independent’s staff is a bunch of racist hypocrites. As far as Neustrom, about time a public official stands up to your garbage! - I Hope Shelvin Wins

Maybe it's time to give this fight up, IND. Continually highlighting Mr. Shelvin's questionable personal and business dealings has obviously done little to deter financial support to his campaign. Is he a shady, is he a crooked? Yes, but you forget this is Louisiana; crookedness is pretty much the standard when it comes to running for political office. Regardless of his past, Shelvin has support in this city, and printing the names of his supporters is not going to lessen that support. If anything, it may increase it.

One of the great attributes of Lafayette citizens is their sympathetic nature. Everyone loves to root for an underdog in this city, and always have. I believe your constant negative portrayal of Mr. Shelvin is leading citizens to actually pull for him, in order to stick it to the man (The IND).

Instead of constantly airing out Shelvin's dirty laundry in your print, how about devoting all of that time and effort into highlighting the positive aspects of Mr. Rochon, and why he is a better fit to run District 3. A positives will always resonate stronger with voters.
