http://www.superlawyers.com/about/selection_process.html

As ranked by her peers (i.e. people that practice with and against Susan), she was the only attorney from the Lafayette/Acadiana area recognized in the field of family law in 2007. Every year since then, she was one of two attorneys from the Lafayette/Acadiana area recognized in the area of family law. The other attorney is not one of the other candidates. Why? Because they do not practice this area of law as much as they like to say they do.

If you needed a lawyer, would their marital status play a role in your selection? Would their number of children? Or would their experience and knowledge of the law be the deciding factor? I wouldn't go to a criminal lawyer or a P.I. lawyer for help with a family law problem. - Not Important

So someone who dedicates their life to helping families and parents in distress would know nothing about this job? Someone who does nothing day in and day out dealing with family law? Recognized by the state and other family law attorneys as being a specialist?

Go look at the dockets for Divisions M and H. You won't see Kaye's name, because she hardly does this type of law. You'll see Marshall's name on the cases that require little to know work. You'll see Susan's name next to mother's, father's, grandparent's names handling all types of cases on matter the difficulty.

I don't hold someone not having children against them, just like I wouldn't hold it against someone if they did. Things like that aren't always in God's plan. To through that out is nothing more than a tactic to divert from what's important: Experience in the field!

With all due respect to "Not Important," I am sure the other party probably didn't think it was handled very fairly because these cases can be very contentious and one can hardly be objective when they "won" the case. Winning is not always in the best interest of the children. I have personal experience in seeing such cases, where children are crying in the halls of the courthouse. With attoreys and their clients, it's all about "winning." It is very difficult to believe how someone with no children can understand the emotional needs of children. There is no replacement for practical experience. - Very important

I would say Marhsall Montgomery and Kay Karre Gautreaux have the only experience in raising a family and knowing what the best interest of the children is. I don't know how a person who has no children would know anything about family dynamics with children since every day has different challenges when you are raising children. - Very important

Given that this Court is one of limited jurisdiction, experience should matter most. Of the three, the only candiate I would consider being a family law lawyer is Susan Theall. If one were to check the dockets of Divisions "H" and "M" (designated family court in the 15th JDC which includes Lafayette, Vermilion, and Acadia Parishes) the past several years, Susan's name is the only one that you would see consistently. If there is an issue that would come before the court from the "mundane" (if such a thing exists in domestic law) to the complex, Susan has handled it and handled it well. I say that as a contemporary as well as someone who has used her services.

No disrespect to Mr. Montgomery and Ms Gautreaux, but their experience in domestic law pails in comparison to Susan. - Not Important
