@John A. Flynn: As I understand it, when the NO Bowl (that doesn't look right) was the only bowl affiliated with the SBC, it had to choose the winner. Now that the GoDaddy.com Bowl (Mobile, AL) is also affiliated with the SBC (new as of last year, I think), the NO Bowl only has to choose the champion two years out of four. Since they chose the champion last year, choosing other than the champion this year would not put them in a bind to have to choose the champion in the next two years.

As for "invites to better bowls", I also understand that no team may turn down an invitation to a bowl that its conference is affiliated with unless the "better bowl" is a BCS bowl. No offense, but I'm not sure that's in play here (before the Cajuns lost to WKU, the talk around here was for "better bowls" as well).

Bowls are about three things: regional interest, good match ups, and ticket sales. Word on the street here is that ASU didn't travel well to the post-Katrina NO Bowl that was held in Lafayette. That may be an unfair characterization given those circumstances. While ULL and ASU lead the SBC in home attendance, (ULL 29,420 vs. ASU 23,281 through Week 9), there's a feeling that ULL would travel better to the NO Bowl, making them an attractive choice. Then again, maybe this is just hometown media bias.

I'm just excited about having something to play for next week, and am contemplating the trip up to Jonesboro myself. - Dave in Broussard

I guess the fact that the Arkansas State Red Wolves are #1 in the conference is irrelevant here? I understood the NO Bowl HAD to extend the invite to the Sun Belt and CUSA champions. Those teams haven't been determined yet, but the only way ULL makes that criteria is to beat ASU next Saturday in Jonesboro. ASU controls its destiny right now, and if they win out and go 10-2 I'm sure they'll get an invite to a better bowl, but if the New Orleans Bowl and the Sun Belt conference are OK with just ignoring A-State, I say the Red Wolves should just pull out of the Sun Belt and find a conference that plays by the rules.

Just a couple of nits to pick. First, "online" *is* an option - I made my deposit that way on 10/31. Second, ragincajuns.com indicates that those deposits are non-refundable. Worst case there's no bowl and I've just helped out the athletic program.
