If the city council is demanding Mafia-style “protection money”, can the FBI prosecute Joey Durel under RICO statutes? - Carlos the Jackal

LPD should place so many officers in that area that it is so over policed that people will stop going d/t all together. Then the bar owners can see which is cheaper, no customers or a small fee to help cover expenses that their business causes. Los can cover the expense of the extra officers with the increased revenue from fines fir..open container...under age drinking...OWI...disturbing the peace ...and so on. - I have a solution.

This whole problem downtown is a direct result of local government involvement down there. They poured a ton of money into "revitalizing" downtown. People/businesses didn't move in like they'd hoped, so they paniced and approved every liquor&occupational license that came along so it'd be "viberant".

Every bar down there was licensed by LCG, permitted by LCG, during the Durel administration (except for Grant Street). Is anyone calling LCG to task for all this? No. Oddly enough, many people commenting here are clamoring for MORE government control of permitting and zoning!

Well as AndIdoknowtoo says:

"Everyone knows the large profit from bars"

His logic indicates that Property Taxes, Sales Taxes, DDA Taxes, are not enough for theses businesses. I can picture Snidley Whiplash wringing his hands and salivating, wanting to further impact the gross profits of the bar owners. Those greedy b@#t@rds!

It's a scam so our underpaid law enforcement can subsidize
their income. After all they can't get in on the big deals. Like garbage transfer stations or,TIFS! The bar owners will win their case. Also why is jo-jo not crying about city money being spent to defend this?

Why is it okay for LCG to discriminate against bars located on Jefferson Street? There are bars all over the City of Lafayette. Why are those bars exempt?

What I'd like to see from The Independent is a monthly fee breakdown for each bar that is obligated to pay this "security tax" so that we can see exactly how much LCG is taking in on this deal. - RaginCajun77

Obvious extortion. The city does not want this in court. They will have serious refunds to pay if so. - LawMan

I don't patronize these places but I agree with the bar owners. Police protection of our homes/businesses is a public service we all pay for through taxes. So they must pay a levy?
The mob also offers that same service...they call it "protection". The DA calls it racketeering.
These bar owners are not staging special events. They are simply conducting daily commerce. Yet they are singled out because too many citizens patronize their places of business?

Bar Owners should be made to pay these fees and they should be suspended. They knew about the fees and that they had to pay or face suspension. If they want to test it, they should have filed a complaint or lawsuit. It is very unsafe downtown after dark with all these bars and alcohol on the streets and I think if one wants to operate a bar downtown he shouldnot have any problems with making it safe for others. Everyone knows the large profit from bars. Obviously, bar owners want the money at the cost of our safety. - andidoknowtoo

I thought I read in The Advertiser or Advocate that Karma was part of this appeal. Are they not appealing? Whatever happened a long time ago when Tim Melancon with the LCG cited them for several violations? I guess their mortgage note trumped whatever violations of city ordinances were in question. I'd like to know more. Thanks. - yesidoknow
