This is obviously still an ongoing problem at this theatre. My husband went two nights in a row, and during the movie the second night, he found a bed bug on his shirt. He still didn't think much of it until a couple days later, when bites showed up on the back of his neck and down both of his forearms. After some research, he was able to confirm it looks exactly like bed bug bites. Additionally, the bug on his shirt in the theatre also looked exactly like a the picture he looked up of a bed bug. He has obviously had a bad reaction to the bites, because they have gotten worse and now look to be infected. He has broken out in a rash in big areas around the bites. He has been to two dermatologists this week and is having a biopsy done. The back of his neck looks awful. He now has some of the rash showing up on the trunk of his body. It seems as though his body is having a bad reaction to the bites. What is even worse is the reaction he got when he called the theatre just to let them know. He wasn't calling to get anything from them, he just wanted to tell them his experience. They were EXTREMELY rude to him on the phone, denying ever having bed bugs in the theatre and accusing him of making it up. This is ridiculous and something should be done about it. Additionally, the attitude and response from the theatre should not be so abrasive. Thats the part that makes us both so furious! - Alicia Mouton

As promised in my post above, I have invited Ms Miller to an event this week where we will have other invited media and the Louisiana health department present We will demonstrate our continued bed bug free environment at our theatres and demonstrate the thorough inspection process we use to stay vigilant for and eliminate this pest's presence in our theatres.

I really think I may have them and it only started since I went watch immortals...my sister in law mentioned this but I didn't listen ...now I noticed a few bites on me but I thought nothing of it...now I went to see the premiere of breaking dawn...and I've been itching like crazy ..but I can't say I found one yet...one thing is for sure that is the last time I go to the grand 16 again....and if I do undoubtedly find out I got it I will somehow have them pay for the extermination of my home! - Coty

I appreciate you addressing the issue of pests in this forum. It makes me much more comfortable about visiting the theater. I was worried because there was no response. I look forward to the premier of the new Twilight movie on Thurs midnight. - Hope

Providing a clean and enjoyable moviegoing environment is of paramount importance to The Grand Theatres. There appears to be some misinformation and speculation out there and we would like to set the record straight. We are way ahead of the curve in proactively treating all potential pests including bed bugs. We have worked with the Louisiana Department of Health on this issue and they too have indicated we are addressing this issue in a very proactive manner.

Based upon a thorough and certified inspection completed this morning, there are no bed bugs in the Grand Theatres in Lafayette. We also completed an inspection 4 weeks ago and did so six months prior as well. We currently conduct weekly inspections by management and now quarterly inspections by a certified bed bug sniffing dog. Again, that dog and his handler found no bed bugs in the theatre today.

As has been our practice, should we find a problematic seat, it is removed in addition to three seats in every direction from that seat. We then replace those seats with clean seats. The problem seats are then contained and heated to over 120 degrees. This is the only proven non chemical way we have found to eradicate the bugs.

We are in the process of arranging yet another return visit by our dog handler this week and will advise the press and the health department to see our processes first hand and to reassure our guests that we have and will continue to address any concerns of bed bugs at The Grand Theatre.

Any place of public assembly is at risk be it a restaurant, hotel, rest home, convention center or a theatre. It’s how you stay ahead of the situation that makes the difference in providing a clean environment for your guests. We feel we are making that difference.

Again, we take providing a clean and enjoyable moviegoing environment seriously for our guests. Until the government permits a chemical that can pretreat areas for these bugs, all places of public assembly are at risk. At the Grand Theatre, we are proactively inspecting and treating all of our auditoriums to constantly stay vigilant for and eliminate the pest’s presence in our theatres.

I read this a few days ago & I haven't seen anyone representing The Grand 16 refuting the accusations. Not responding gives the appearance of truth, as in they can't deny, so they'll just ignore the questions & the attention might just go away. I haveSOLD the tickets I had for opening night. I can see Twilight at another theater. The situation may be the same at other theaters, but until I hear about them, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Since this story has appeared, I've heard from a couple of former employees, there is some truth to the accusations. I've had to fight lice before & I sure don't relish the thought of bed bugs, something even worse! At the price of movie tkts these days, I don't want to bring any souvenirs home.

Yes bed bugs are very resistant to chemical treatment because the chemical have to come into direct connect of the bugs within a very start period of spraying them. And if that is the only method you use, you will most likely continue to have a problem.
The best and only way to eradicate them is with an non-chemical and safe for humans insect powder called, Diatomaceous Earth. It works incredibly fast and well. It is a powder that stays unlike the chemical sprays that don't last.
The stigma of bed bugs is quite an illusion. They aren't dangerous at all and can easily be spotted and controlled if the effort is made. - BedBug Conqueror

Inform yourself about bed bugs. In talking about my problem, many have shared that in Lafayette many apartment complexes have them, and could easily be in hotels and movie theaters. They are making a huge comeback. MAJOR problem to get rid of and will creep you out at night (nocturnal-like the dark). KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR and then call a professional immediately if you suspect you have them. They are tough to get rid of but they can be. Just do a google of how to get rid of bed bugs and you will see what I mean. No way will I go to the theater right now! - ragin cajun

So, just because some unknown source says there are bed bugs there, then there are beg bugs there? That seems like pretty bad reporting to just throw out that a business MAY have bed bugs, without having any proof. I wonder who will be next on the witch hunt! - ThatGirl

I'm relying on you No...
not holding you to anything, but just counting on you letting us know. And God bless you if you can go often cause we've had to cut back cuz of the cost of the tkts. We used to go probably 30 times a year, but now we probably less than ten, maybe even five. We do not go to a movie unless we hear from someone its good, whereas, a few yrs ago, oh, well if we spent $25 bad movie tkts, at least it was an afternoon out. I miss it too. - Hope

My family and I go the Grand almost weekly. I've never been bitten by a bed bug and our home hasn't been infested (yet). If anything changes, I'll let you know, but be wary of media hype (I do think that the Independent is one of the best media outlets in the area) and mass panic (Y2K, alar, Dr. Oz, etc.) - Nobeddbuggzhereyet

The premier of the new Twilight film is next week. I have tkts already. As of this posting, I do not have bedbugs, nor do my children. Nearly every seat in the house is filled on the Thurs @ midnight. THE GRAND HAD BETTER CLOSE & FUMIGATE! If I catch bedbugs from that theater, I absolutely will seek any damages resulting from visiting that theater. - Hope

Who in their right mind would go there knowing they have basically acknowledged they have a bedbug infestation? Unreal.

These people are to money hungry and greedy to close the doors to fix this on going problem; they have trying to treat this over over a year and nothing is working; they don't care about customers or employees- they just care about money - CCLafayette

I guess it would be hard to hold The Grand legally responsible for any infestation that may result from them being so negligent. How do you prove you got bed bugs from The Grand?

They probably know this and are betting on this point, and therefore not treating the issue responsibly.

Can we have a follow up article on how to spot these things and what to do if we suspect our home is infested? Not just because of the outbreak from The Grand, but also some of us travel and should be more educated about what might happen if we unknowingly bring these things back with us. - Legal Liability

sure wont be seeing movies at Grand Theater 16 any longer if that is how the manager treats this problem. Bed bugs are a MAJOR problem and simple exterminating procedures DO NOT get rid of the bugs. the chairs need to be removed and the whole place needs to be treated while EMPTY. then new seating put in place. Normal pesticides DO NOT work on bed bugs. - Cheryl Parham
